Sometimes it’s better to keep certain things to yourself than to open up to someone who immediately responds by saying they’ve been through worse. When you share something painful, you’re not necessarily looking for someone to compete with your experience or prove that their struggles are greater—you may simply want to feel heard and understood. Everyone experiences pain differently, and someone else having gone through something worse doesn’t make what you’re feeling any less valid. If opening up consistently leaves you feeling dismissed, compared, or unheard, choosing to stay quiet can feel safer than exposing your vulnerability to someone who doesn’t know how to hold space for it. Not everything needs to become a competition; sometimes protecting your peace means only sharing your deepest thoughts with people who genuinely listen.
