Your King is Coming!
Zechariah 3:1-10 (NIV) – [1] Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. [2] The LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?” [3] Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. [4] The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put rich garments on you.” [5] Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the LORD stood by. [6] The angel of the LORD gave this charge to Joshua: [7] “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in my ways and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.’
[8] “Listen, O high priest Joshua and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. [9] See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,” says the LORD Almighty, “and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day. [10] In that day each of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and fig tree,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
Joshua and his priestly companions were symbolic of things to come. In their official priestly cleansing from sin they prefigured the future cleansing of the nation Israel. This future cleansing was linked with the coming of the Sin-Remover who was given three messianic titles - My Servant, the Branch, and the Stone. (Bible Knowledge Commentary)
1. Jesus is the Servant.
Matthew 20:24-28 (NIV) – [24] When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. [25] Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. [26] Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, [27] and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— [28] just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
2. Jesus is the Branch.
Servant and Branch are both titles for the Messiah. As servant, the Messiah obeys God’s will by becoming a sin-offering so that many might be made righteous. The Branch is a metaphor for kingship that identifies the Messiah as David’s descendant. (NLT Study Bible Notes)
Isaiah 11:1, 6 (NIV) – [1] A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit… [6] The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.
Jeremiah 33:15-16 (NIV) – [15] “‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David's line; he will do what is just and right in the land. [16] In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.’”
3. Jesus is the Stone.
1 Peter 2:6-8 (NIV) – [6] For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” [7] Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,” [8] and, “A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.”
At His first advent, Jesus was a stumbling stone to Israel who rejected Him, but He became the foundation stone for the church. At His second advent, He will smite the kingdoms of the world and establish His glorious kingdom. The seven “eyes” on the stone probably speak of our Lord’s omniscience. (Wiersbe Bible Commentary)
Upon one stone shall be seven eyes—namely, the watchful “eyes” of Jehovah’s care ever fixed “upon” it. The eye is the symbol of Providence: “seven,” of perfection. (Jamieson, Faussett, and Brown)
Zechariah 4:10 (NIV) – [10] “Who despises the day of small things? Men will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. (These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range throughout the earth.)”
Revelation 5:6 (NIV) – [6] Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
The “inscription” engraved on the stone remains unexplained, but many of the early church fathers and interpreters ever since have taken the engraving as a preview of Messiah’s wounds. (Thomas Constable’s Notes on the Bible)
Isaiah 53:4-5 (NIV) – Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. [5] But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
4. Jesus is the Savior.
The removal of Israel’s sin in a single day alludes to the Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16. It foreshadows Christ’s crucifixion, when the Lamb of God would take away the sin of the world. (NLT Study Bible Notes)
John 1:29 (NIV) – [29] The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
That day is shorthand for “the day of the Lord,” the day of God’s intervention in history when God will judge the wicked, deliver the righteous, and restore creation. (NLT Study Bible Notes)
Micah 4:3-4 (NIV) – [3] He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. [4] Every man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the LORD Almighty has spoken.
Zechariah 3:10 (MSG) – [10] “At that time, everyone will get along with one another, with friendly visits across the fence, friendly visits on one another’s porches.”
“In that day,” the Lord promised, the Israelites will all “invite” their (Gentile) neighbors to join them in enjoying their peace and prosperity. Israel would enjoy peace and security as never before, even under the reign of Solomon. Then God will lift the curse that He imposed on the creation at the Fall, and there will be agricultural prosperity—as well as spiritual prosperity. Paradise lost will become paradise regained.
