Zina's Murder Juvenile Justice Crisis

Listen Later

In 2013, a heartbreaking tragedy occurred in Port Said, Egypt, when five-year-old Zeina, a beloved child in her community, was abducted while playing near her home. The perpetrators, two seventeen-year-old neighbors, Alaa and Mahmoud, had intended to assault her.
As the neighborhood began a frantic search, the boys panicked and threw Zeina down a building shaft, causing her death. The crime sparked national outrage and intense calls for the death penalty. However, under Egyptian law, their age limited the maximum sentence, and they were each sentenced to fifteen years in prison.
Zeina’s story remains a powerful reminder of the importance of vigilance and child safety. Her memory continues to be honored in the community through murals, and the case ignited broader discussions about judicial reform and the handling of serious crimes committed by minors.
