Lions and Tigers and Bears... OH NO!!!........... Adventure!   We all have our definitions of what that word means.  To Matt Guthmiller, adventure turned out to be just a little trip around the world.   Oh....and he did it at the age of 19 making him the youngest person in history to accomplish this incredible feat.  In this episode, Matt joins us to talk about how he came up with the idea and made this dream a reality.   People fly around the world all the time in the airline industry.   It's nothing for a 787 to cross the ocean from continent to continent.  Try it in a small single engine airplane with 200 gallons of extra fuel on board, 25% over gross weight,  dodging thunderstorms, drinking coke and eating oreos, all while catching up on the latest Game of Thrones from your buddies on a satellite phone.  Matt sure had a great time and his story is simply amazing.   Perfect example of.......Dream It - Plan It - DO IT!!!   Congrats Matt on an accomplishment of a lifetime!

Special Guest - Russell Armstrong and his 1950 DHC-2 Dehavilland Beaver

 

When you think of nostalgic aircraft and the history of aviation, there are a few aircraft that top the list.  Typically aircraft are designed and produced with a specific goal and task in mind.  In 1947 the aviation industry gave birth to one of the most iconic aircraft ever produced.  The DHC-2 de Havilland Beaver.  The Beaver was only in production for a short time period lasting from 1947 to 1967 of which over 1600 Beavers were made.  Many of these are still flying and working today.   The Beaver changed the way people live and work in the bush country of Alaska and Canada.

In this episode of My Pilot Chronicles, we caught up with Mr. Russell Armstrong who recently acquired a 1950 Beaver with a Serial number of 86.  This is a rare find and it practically looks brand new.   Mr. Armstrong, who is a native of Commerce Texas found his dream plane up in the Victoria B.C. area.  Finding the plane was the easy part, bringing back to Texas..........well, that's a whole other story.   Join us as Russell describes how he found this beautiful Beaver and the adventure he experienced bringing it home.

Are you afraid to talk to ATC?  Ever been on the verge of what you might think was an emergency and needed help?  Join us in this episode of MPC as special guest Philip Perez and Nicole Webb from the Fort Worth ARTCC (Center) discuss the role of ATC and the services they have to offer pilots.  ATC is a great resource to be able to tap into when needed.  They are trained for many years before they are allowed to handle the skies solo.   We as pilots probably do not know the amount of training and dedication that these controllers have to their jobs.   A few months ago, I was lucky enough to tour Ft. Worth Center and see the operation first hand.   Simply put, it was AMAZING!

Think of ATC as a life line when you need it.   These people are dedicated to make the skies safe for all of us.   If you think pilots have it hard, imagine memorizing a sectional and all the data, symbols, frequencies, colors, etc.......and then having to recreate that map and draw it by memory.  This is what the training is like for an air traffic controller and usually takes several years to develop the mental image.   ATC are people just like me and you.  They put their pants on the same way we do.   As I strolled through the ATC building, it was amazing to see the dance that was happening.   As a pilot, I had no clue the workload and the stress that a controller had.  ATC is there to help you have a safe flight.  Weather avoidance, traffic avoidance and sequencing, emergency situations, or just a friendly voice to talk to.....ATC serve many roles in our aviation world.   My recommendation is that if you are new, or maybe afraid to talk to ATC, then contact your local Center and setup a tour.  You will be surprised at what you learn and will help you as a pilot understand the system and the services they provide to us.   The one thing that I myself did as a young pilot was to request VFR flight following everywhere that I went.    This gets you in the system and lets you ease into a working interaction.  Bored on a flight? Call up ATC and ask how their day is going.  You will be amazed how easy it is to bust the dreaded fear of talking to ATC.   Go ahead, give it a try!

NASA Launches Single Pilot Airline Operations Study

Special Guest - Airline Pilot Andy Shane

Have you ever wondered what it was like to fly an international airline route?  Join us as our guest Andy Shane discusses some of the challenges flying the Boeing 777 half way around the world.  Whether you have aspirations of becoming an airline pilot or just a fun flyer like most of us, Andy gives a few words of advice when it comes to talking to ATC.   Traveling to different parts of the world, you get to experience the different dialects and cultural differences.   "You have to be a Recorder", Andy says.   What ever ATC tells you to do, be sure to read back exactly what they say word for word so that there is not a miss communication.   This is one of the biggest barriers to international flight.  Luckily on the Boeing 777, these flights consist of 4 pilots in the cockpit.  That is 8 eyeballs, and 8 ears watching and listening to everything going on.   Andy spent 10 years prior to the airlines flying the KC-135 in the Air Force.   Some of the most fun flying in his aviation career for sure.  If you want to fly the Airlines, Andy's advice is to go for it!  It is an amazing career that he has enjoyed for over 20 years.

Paradise..........We all have our idea as to what that word means. The visions that we as pilots and passengers get to experience from the world above, gives this word "Paradise" a whole new meaning. In this episode, we speak with Captain Rudy Schloesing about what it is like to fly Twin Otter Seaplanes in the Caribbean and the Maldive Islands. Flying an airplane on floats brings forth a whole new set of challenges. For example, when you are taxing a float plane and would like to stop, there are not any brakes. This along with the complexity of learning how to steer the airplane on the water is probably one of the most challenging techniques to master as a new seaplane pilot. Bush Pilot "Brad Benson" Describes flying in the Alaskan Mountains.

Bush Flying......What is it?    In this episode I sit down with Alaskan Bush Pilot Brad Benson who flys and runs a small charter/aerial sight seeing business based out of Healy Alaska.   Brad describes what it is like to fly in and around the mountains of Denali National Park, home of Mount McKinley.  McKinley is the highest peak in North America rising up to over 20,000' in the air.   Bush flying is often thought of as some of the most dangerous types of flying that there is.  There are all kinds of hazards involved including, terrain, weather, emergencies and the skill that it takes to handle all of these conditions in a moments notice all at the same time.   Bush pilots typically operate out of small, unimproved runways that most of us would never dare put our prized Piper or Cessna down on.  These guys do it everyday as a way of life.   Up in Alaska, Airplanes out number all other means of transportation.  It is a way of life that would not be sustainable without the Bush Pilot and his Machines.   Flying in the bush......Yup, its just another day at the office for Mr. Brad Benson.
