TWENTY-FOUR HOURS BEFORE SAIGON'S TAKEOVER by the Communists, more than 6000 Americans and South Vietnamese were rescued by helicopter airlifts. The chaos, tragedy, and heroism of this evacuation are documented in excerpts from a personal tape recording of Air Force Lieutenant Richard Van de Geer who, for 14 continuous hours, ferried people from the American Embassy to ships offshore. Also featured are interviews with former State Department personnel who describe the evacuation plan and growing panic as thousands desperately tried to escape. On May 24, 1970, a Monday, Ohio National Guardsmen shot 13 Kent State University students, a consequence of a Vietnam War protest. Four of the students died. It was the peak time for anti-war protests, sit-ins, and rallies on college campuses. Produced by All Things Considered, 2000.

MICHAEL BARONOWSKI WAS A 19-YEAR-OLD MARINE when he landed in Vietnam in 1966. He brought with him a reel-to-reel tape recorder and used it to record audio letters for his family back in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He was killed in action in 1967. Baronowski's tapes were discovered in 1997. Baronowski's friend and fellow platoon-member Tim Duffie discovered the tapes and sent them to Lost & Found Sound and NPR.
