  • Jonathan Edwards' Resolutions (13-14)
    I Corinthians 13:1-7 (NASB)

    1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
    2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains,
       but do not have love, I am nothing.
    3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me
       nothing.
    4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
    5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
    6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
    7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

  • Jonathan Edwards' Resolutions (#12)
    1 Corinthians 3 (NASB)
    1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants
       in Christ.
    2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it.  Indeed, even
       now you are not yet able,
    3 for you are still fleshly.  For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly,
       and are you not walking like mere men?
    4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not mere men?
    5 What then is Apollos?  And what is Paul?  Servants through whom you believed, even as the
       Lord gave opportunity to each one.
    6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth.
    7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the
       growth.
    8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will receive his own reward according
       to his own labor.
    9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.
    10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a
         foundation, and another is building on it.  But each man must be careful how he builds on it.
    11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
    12 Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,
    13 each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with
         fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.
    14 If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.
    15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as
         through fire.
    16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
    17 If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy,
         and that is what you are.
    18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must
         become foolish, so that he may become wise.
    19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God.  For it is written, “He is the one who
          catches the wise in their craftiness”;
    20 and again, “The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are useless.”
    21 So then let no one boast in men.  For all things belong to you,
    22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to
         come; all things belong to you,
    23 and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God.

    2 Peter 1:2-3, 5, 8 (NASB)
    2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;
    3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
    5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge,
    8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
    2 Peter 3:18 (NASB)
    18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

    Luke 18:9-14 (NASB)
    9 And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

  • Luke 2:8-11 - A Message That First Scares Us...And Then Saves Us
    Luke 2:8-11 (NASB)
    8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.
    9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly
       frightened.
    10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people;
    11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

    17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to
         fulfill.
    18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall
        pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
    19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the
        same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he
        shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
    20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees,
        you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

  • Lamentations 3
    Lamentations 3:1-24 (NKJV)
    1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of His wrath.
    2  He has led me and made me walk
       In darkness and not in light.
    3  Surely He has turned His hand against me
      Time and time again throughout the day.
    4 He has aged my flesh and my skin,
      And broken my bones.
    5 He has besieged me
      And surrounded me with bitterness and woe.
    6 He has set me in dark places
      Like the dead of long ago.
    7 He has hedged me in so that I cannot get out;
      He has made my chain heavy.
    8 Even when I cry and shout,
      He shuts out my prayer.
    9 He has blocked my ways with hewn stone;
      He has made my paths crooked.
    10 He has been to me a bear lying in wait,
        Like a lion in ambush.
    11 He has turned aside my ways and torn me in pieces;
        He has made me desolate.
    12 He has bent His bow
       And set me up as a target for the arrow.
    13 He has caused the arrows of His quiver
       To pierce my loins.
    14 I have become the ridicule of all my people—
       Their taunting song all the day.
    15 He has filled me with bitterness,
       He has made me drink wormwood.
    16 He has also broken my teeth with gravel,
       And covered me with ashes.
    17 You have moved my soul far from peace;
        I have forgotten prosperity.
    18 And I said, “My strength and my hope
       Have perished from the Lord.”
    19 Remember my affliction and roaming,
       The wormwood and the gall.
    20 My soul still remembers
        And sinks within me.
    21 This I recall to my mind,
        Therefore I have hope.
    22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
        Because His compassions fail not.
    23 They are new every morning;
        Great is Your faithfulness.
    24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
        “Therefore I hope in Him!”
