007 - The Importance of Goal Setting

Listen Later

When I was NEW to the 'creative your life' using the Law of Attraction idea, I thought it was a waste of time to sit down and write your goals out. My attitude was that I knew what my goals were, so why write them out. It wasn't until I studied Jack Canfield that I decided to write down my goals. Jack Canfield is the author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and a book I am now reading for the second time, Success Principles. I am reading it for the second time because I didn't really DO any process in the book - at least not for very long. Back when I read it the first time, I was what I now call, 'self help junkie' - you read a book - think it is awesome and when you are finished, you jump to another book - and then, another one and another one. Always searching for THAT secret that will change your life. That's amazing right? We all tend to keep searching and searching...but the ONE thing that will change your life is if you STOP and actually DO the processes in the book. Goal setting is one of those processes that are so powerful for creating an amazing life - everything you have ever desired.   Jack Canfield says: "Goal-setting is an absolute must for people who want to succeed, find their purpose, and create joy in their lives. Without clear goals, you will not have a clear direction on where you're heading in your life. When you know your life purpose, determine your vision, convert your desires into achievable goals and then ACT on them, you're virtually guaranteed success."   The way our brain works is that when you have a goal, your subconscious mind begins to look for information, and/or opportunities for you to achieve this goal you have set. Pretty cool eh? Sounds weird, I know, but remember...EVERYTHING is ENERGY!!!   Here is how I went about creating my goals:
  • purchase a book & write my incredible goals on it just for the fun of it.
  • I skipped the first page and started where I had 2 sides. I wrote my goal down on the right hand side - in the centre of the page. Then, I wrote down everything that had to happen for me to attain this goal around it. I circled the goal and drew a line that lead to the goal - this is called 'mind-mapping' and looks like a speech bubble.
  • on the left hand side of the page, I put photos that would trigger my subconscious mind to look for my goals.
For example, I had a goal to start my podcast by August 1st and that it would motivate and inspire everyone that listened to it. I had a photo of the libsyn logo, since I knew that I needed to host my recordings somewhere. I had a photo of my designed podcast artwork and anything else that I could think of. When I was finished my design, I would carry my book around with me and look at the book and my goals, a couple of times a day. It was so inspiring and I could feel the excitement in my body when I looked at the pages.   Everything fell into place and although I didn't actually start my podcast until the 3rd - I celebrated the fact that I had achieved my goal. This podcast is not my only goal, so I continue to carry my book around and look at the pages...with excitement of the changes coming to my life.   I have a fantastic freebie for you this week - its a workbook that you can download and start writing your goals down today. When you achieve one of your goals that you desire, be sure let us all know on the Telfer Coaching facebook page.   Just a reminder...The important part to remember is to DO the work...unless you do something different...how can your life change?
