009: The One Thing You Can Control

Listen Later

The One Thing You Can Control (Even if your life is falling apart) with Coach, Donna Karlin

Donna Karlin, who's coached Fortune 100 leaders and TED Fellows, joins Coach Elix this episode.

She is far more than an accomplished business woman. She also survived cancer and a tornado that destroyed her home. This is why you can trust her when she says: You can control your story, even if you can’t control the circumstances.

In this episode, Donna discusses how we can face life head-on and be masters of our own stories no matter what we've gone through. The way we narrate our lives — to ourselves and others — literally shapes what they become. That’s both the danger of our stories... and their power.

Tune in to find out 3 actionable steps you can take to get back on track.

Key Takeaways:

There are plenty of things that we cannot change about our past but we can change the story we tell ourselves about our past.

We don’t always have control over the circumstances that we face, but we have control over how we relate to these circumstances.

If you don’t create your story, somebody else is going to do it for you.

The best way to figure out who you are is in conversation with others. The role of a coach is to help reveal you to yourself.

Take away blame from others and suspend judgement so that you can see yourself more clearly. Ask yourself: how are you helping yourself?

Look at what life throws to you head on and ask yourself “what can I do with it,” not in spite of it.

Instead of asking "what if you fail" ask "what if you could?"

Ask the people who know you best, what are they seeing in you that you are not seeing?

How you will own your story:

“How many times do we go through our lives where we adopt the stories that our parents have of us, our siblings have of us, that are so outdated it's not to be believed?...It’s really important to craft the story not only that you want people to know of you, but that you want to live.” -Donna Karlin

What would you do if you knew you wouldn’t fail? What is the first step you will take to start rewriting your story?
