Angel Island in San Francisco Bay was the Ellis Island of the west coast, the induction center for immigrates coming to America. However, its primary function was as a detention center for Chinese immigrants and later, Japanese POWs. I visited the center shortly before it was scheduled for massive renovation in 2005.
