Necessary Realness

013// Uncomfortably Unpacking White Privilege & Being Open To Being Wrong

Listen Later

Hey friends,

Todays episode is a very candid conversation about the black lives matter movement and the responsibility we have as white/non black people to educate ourselves and pull up. I am very intentional with using the term ‘black people’ over people of colour, because terminology is important.

I want to very openly say that this is very much me dumping what is on my heart and mind and speaking it out loud. This is by no means a comfortable conversation to have which is all the more reason why we need to have it.

I fully acknowledge that I don’t have the right words, I don’t know whether that I am saying is right or wrong. But I’d rather speak out and be corrected than be silent and stay wrong.

I hope that this serves as a reminder that:

  • This isn’t just about racism, it’s about the dehumanisation of black people.
  • We cannot just only embrace the beauty of black culture and reject the pain.
  • It’s our responsibility to educate ourselves.
  • It is not job of black people to validate our feelings or hold our hand through our learning.
  • We don’t get to decide what is or isn’t offensive to black people.
  • We WILL get it wrong.
  • We must be open to being checked.
  •

And most of all be committed to listening, learning and taking that knowledge to actively be part of the change.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and if you enjoyed this episode I would be so grateful if you'd rate and write a review on iTunes it would mean the world to me. xx
