There are certain fundamentals for barrel racing that a horse needs to be proficient in before they are ever introduced to the pattern. Many horses, unfortunately, are not given that basic training before they are put into barrel racing training. As such, the process becomes much more difficult and the horse may never live up to its potential. Fundamentals are key. They are like the ABCs. You need to learn the alphabet before you can learn how to read and write. Teach your horse the ABCs and, not only will teaching the barrel pattern be a breeze, but you will also have a horse that will maintain a good pattern long term.
