The spiritual life is likened to a merchant man who trades for goodly pearls. What we trade is not the natural steps taken, for no natural step has in it the ability to yield a spiritual result but the understanding that instructed that activity. Thus, the Word of God is the only certified seed that is sown by our obedience in our natural steps. By our obedience to the Word, we buy for ourselves righteousness, perception, deeper understanding etc.
