We are often too strong for God: full of our own strength, confidence and wisdom. What we fail to recognise though, is that our exalted self stands against the wisdom of God. We cannot dwell with God or be used by Him when we are full of ourselves. 

This is why afflictions are necessary. We must be totally rid of ourselves, until the Lord grants us a contrite and humble spirit: for such is the state of those to whom the Lord is near.
