Summary of this episode:
OK my fellow and future outsourcers! Welcome to the Free Outsourcing 101 Course where you’re going to learn everything about outsourcing to help you on your journey.
But right up front I am going to be the guy who tries to manage your expectations. Outsourcing is not a silver bullet. This is not going to be the ultimate solution for you straight off the bat. You are not going to find that one amazing freelancer who can develop a website, design your logo, write your copy and cure cancer. It’s just not realistic to have someone do everything – and if they do exist they’re probably charging themselves out at $100 per hour.
So we’re going to go through the process of doing outsourcing realistically. You might end up hiring a few freelancers to help you with a project or an ongoing business. Whatever the case, welcome to the world of outsourcing and may your business prosper!
Before we go any further, let’s establish the ground rules: At all times you need to remember our overriding principle – freelancers are people too. You should treat them with respect and acknowledge they are adding value to your company or your project.
If you are not prepared to live by that one simple rule then please stop listening. I’m not interested in helping people who are out to exploit humankind. Operate in a fair and ethical model and life is better for everyone.
So let’s talk about the advantages of outsourcing. This list isn’t comprehensive and you might be able to add a few extras:
Now, let’s talk about why you would outsource rather than adopt a direct relationship approach.
Let’s say you are in Germany and you’ve decided you want to get a website built. You have a few options:
You could employ a web designer. This comes with lots of bureaucratic impediments, such as payroll, insurance and lots of paperwork.
You could approach local businesses and ask them for quotes. You could sit down with each company, go over the specs, fill in their surveys and spec sheets and have an interview. And do that four times.
Or, you could post a good job description on an outsourcing platform, select that you only want German freelancers, and post the job. Possibly the same companies – and a few more – would bid for the job. You save time and money AND you only have to post the job once to get the same result.
All three options will deliver work to your fellow Germans. But one method is far more efficient for you than the other methods.
The advantages of outsourcing are so numerous I won’t go into them here, suffice to say so many people are choosing to outsource work right now that the sector is exploding. It’s super popular and becoming more so.
As people are becoming more specialized they are able to offer their services to a multitude of companies at the same time. This has advantages for the freelancer and the company.
The company doesn’t have to worry about bureaucratic impediments and can get on with being productive and increasing output, thereby adding to its local economy through the creation of wealth and the generation of taxes.
The freelancer benefits because they are able to take on more work, be less reliant on single income streams and more able to satisfy multiple requests. Their quality of life will improve through access to resources and their local economy – wherever it is – will benefit through increased spending and the generation of tax revenue.
Everyone’s a winner.
