020. My Lyme Disease Journey and How Believing the Stories Others Tell Us About Who We Are Shapes Who We Become

Listen Later

The stories we tell ourselves - the ones we believe about ourselves - they are the most powerful ones in our lives.

Today on the podcast, I’m telling the story about my lifelong fight with Lyme disease. The dramatic ripple effects of being bit by a tiny tick when I was five, being given the wrong medication, the way my body has fought this disease again and again. All while having symptoms that doctors couldn’t test or understand, so they said I was lying.

Until they finally learned more and discovered I wasn’t lying at all. And until I started really taking ownership of healing myself - until I started looking a little bit further, a little bit deeper, I believed all of them.

From such a young age, I was told I was a liar by the authority figures in my life. So here I believed I was a liar. I identified as a liar. As someone who’s dramatic. As being over the top to get attention. I wasn’t consciously doing this but it was the narrative, it was the story that I was being told about myself, and I believed it.

But I was the only one in my body. And I was right the whole time.

I will never let someone take my voice and doubt my own experience again. Our voice, our experience, our story. They are the most powerful things we have. And until you can take ownership of them, someone else will for you.

I am here to help you take that ownership.
