024: Professional Vs. Amateur

Do you want to know the difference between an amateur and a professional? My mentor shared with me that it's their consistency. Even Bruce Lee stands by this notion. He shared this - I fear not a man who has practiced 10,000 kicks, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. Truthfully thinking, it made sense and so, keeping this in mind, I tried to implement it in my business.

As entrepreneurs, I understand that it's difficult for you to stay still. We see things differently. When we see something an opportunity that we can utilise or a problem that we can solve with our innovation, we usually jump at it real quick, but this can prove to be out downfall.

If we were to keep switching our signature and our unique selling point, the direction of our company would never remain! I had this problem give years ago, while running my own agency. This was during the era where people needed digital services - copywriting, website creation, social media management, video, etc. I wanted to help solve problems, and the direction of my agency kept changing.

However, this has its cons.

Manpower

When you want to provide a new service, you need manpower. Every person you hire has individual skills and if you want to expand your services, you have to hire. This costs money and more often than not, you will need to stretch your manpower.

Portfolio

Your portfolio can't be used. Even if you have done a lot of things prior, coming up with a new service means your previous portfolio doesn't stand for anything. It's like applying for a job in digital marketing when you've done everything except that!

That's why, since 2 years ago, I always remind my team to stick to what we're doing to the point where we become experts. Of course, we all struggled because our culture has always been about innovation and adding value to things all the time, but we stuck to it, and our quality has improved leaps and bounds.

It's not just me who notices the differences. They do too, and when they see how much they've grown, they're inspired and remain extremely driven.

As for myself, I do a lot of speaking engagements and at every single one, I always try to think of different things to touch on and change my speaking style but recently, I've been focused on 2 topics only - personal branding and growth hacking.

I implore you to explore your consistency. Often, it may be the thing that can set you apart from anybody else.
