Whenever the city of Maastricht was in distress during sieges, epidemics or great drought, a richly decorated chest was carried through the city. The chest then went 'on tour' calling in at all of the city's churches, hoping that danger was averted. 'De Noodkist' (distress chest) was named after this custom.
