In 2005, the River Maas' west bank was entirely renewed. The embankment offers a good view of the St. Servatius Bridge, or 'Aw Brök' as it is called by the locals. The renewal work revealed the 13th century bridge's 'first arch', which now spans a footpath. This arch is basically all that remains of the medieval stone bridge.

In 1983, Hotel Derlon, on the corner of Onze Lieve Vrouweplein and Plankstraat, was completely renovated. Remnants of a Roman temple complex were discovered in the ground. Due to the importance of the find, the building plans were altered: the hotel basement now houses a museum, where you can become acquainted with the city's earliest history.

Near Stokstraat, remnants of a Roman bathhouse had been excavated. The outlines of these 'Thermae' are indicated in the paving of the little square above.

The Romans built a bridge in Maastricht: the only permanent cross-river connection to the North Sea. This road junction turned out to be the ideal location for a port, for trade and for inns. A small abutment, built in 1984, marks the location of the Roman bridge.

The church as it is now has been extended and adjusted several times, according to the taste of the time. The core consists of a large three-nave basilica, built on Saint Servatius' grave.

Whenever the city of Maastricht was in distress during sieges, epidemics or great drought, a richly decorated chest was carried through the city. The chest then went 'on tour' calling in at all of the city's churches, hoping that danger was averted. 'De Noodkist' (distress chest) was named after this custom.

The Onze Lieve Vrouwe square is dominated by the robust medieval façade of the 'Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk' (the Church of Our Lady). From the fifth to the eighth century, bishops of Tongres and Maastricht had their seats in the Church of Our Lady.

In the eastern choir gallery of the Church of Our Lady twenty capitals that crown the columns in this gallery can be found. The Heimo capital is the most famous one. It is of extraordinary artistic quality, comparable to the best of twelfth century European sculpture.

Jan van Steffeswert was a talented woodcarver who lived and worked in Maastricht around the year 1500. His work is very special, not only because of its high quality, but also because he was the first person in the Maasland region to sign his carvings.

Along the northern branch of the Jeker River,on Stenenbrug, lies the Bisschopsmolen (Bishop's Mill). This centuries-oldwater mill is still operational. Every day, grain is milled for the Gulpener Brewery and bread is bakedin its own bakery.
