On the north side of the Vrijthof square stands the Generaalshuis (House of the General), which is the entrance to the theatre on the Vrijthof nowadays.

Because of the monuments, the crowded pavement cafés, the size of the square and the many festivities, the Vrijthof is the best-known and most dazzling square in Maastricht ...maybe even in the Netherlands.

On Boschstraat, facing Theunisstraat, the statue of Petrus Regout stands in front of a colossal factory building behind a long wall. The enormous white building is popularly called the 'Eiffel'.

Gentlemen's association Momus was established in 1839, and it serves as a model for the rise of a new class of citizens. It was where the nouveaux riches met: men who had won their spurs in public administration, trade and industry. Yet, the poor neighborhoods were never far away.

The most important war memorial is the 'Limburgs Bevrijdingsmonument' (Limburg liberation monument) on Koningsplein. It was designed by painter Charles Eyck. In September of 1952, it was unveiled. It is a bronze sculpture group that consists of eight human figures, each with its own meaning.

Onze-lieve-vrouwewal, a street on the other side of the River Maas, offers a nice view of the Céramique quarter. Not long ago, the modern Céramique district on the southeast bank of the River Maas was the location of the factory buildings of the pottery industry, Société Céramique.

The pedestrian bridge, called 'de Hoeg Brögk' (high bridge), is the longest one-piece bridge of Europe. It leads you to the square 'Plein 1992', the heart of the new quarter. The square is sometimes called the 'city balcony' of Maastricht, since it is situated more than three meters above the Maas quay, and it offers a great view on the River Maas.

Together with the multifunctional Centre Céramique, Plein 1992 forms the area's so-called 'north node'. It is where culture, recreation an living go hand in hand.

Halfway up the Avenue stands the Rijkswaterstaat (Department of Waterways and Public Works) building by Jan Hubert Henket

In 1995, the 'Bonnefantenmuseum' was the first building to be finished in this prestigious neighborhood. The museum bears the name of the convent it used to be located in.
