Don’t Be Messin with Stressin (Science and experience with stress)
· There is a large difference between bad stress and good stress. The worst stress is chronic stress which increases depression, anxiety, blood pressure, immune system disfunction, emotional instability. Stress is good in short bursts.
· Chronic stress increases amygdala function (Fight or flight) and decreses the hippocampus (memory and focus)
Headline Stress Disorder
A 2018 Study by the PEW research center concluded that two thirds of Americans, despite political affiliation said the future of the country is a source of stress.
· acute onset of paranoia
· anxiety
· fatigue
· sleep loss
· uneasiness about the future makes it difficult to plan for the future and set goals)
Social Media
· continuous use increases feelings of envy, inadequacy, and personal isolation
· Light users actually scored the highest well-being score compared to heavy and non-users
Way to mitigate stress
· Exercise
o Studies show before and after comedy, stress hormones in saliva is lower
· Meditation
· Chewing (Mastication) – Repetitive motion increases activity in brain and relaxation
· Laughter
· Calming scents (Rituals)
· Nature walks (House plants)
· Music (60-80 BPM with no words
· Pets
· Fidgeting
