Annette Pateman was born and raised in the UK to Jamaican parents. She moved to Canada in fall 2012 , where she now lives. Annette grew up listening to Jamaican sayings and folklore. She is a published writer and performance poet who writes about race, Black identity, womanhood, and issues of belonging. The rhythms and culture of her background are often reflected in her writing. Annette is passionate about shining a light on anti Black racism through the medium of storytelling and poetry. Annette has been featured on her local CBC radio broadcast and in a CBC web story and newspaper articles. ‘Spectrum’ is a book of poetry she published in May 2020, which features poems on race, Black identity and relationships. Annette has performed poetry from her book ‘ Spectrum’, using African style dance, her djembe hand drum and percussion instruments to accompany her performance.

In today’s episode Annette shares an experience of African-Caribbean rhythms through use of spoken word poetry from her book ‘ Spectrum’.  Annette performs her poetry using African style dance, her djembe hand drum and percussion instruments to accompany her performance.
