045 Mount Baker Ultra Run with Dan Probst

Listen Later

The Mount Baker Ultra Marathon has been in existence since Dan Probst first organized an attempt in 2013. The 108 mile run, started by touching Bellingham Bay and then summiting 10,781 foot Mount Baker before turning around and running back to the start. This year will be the first year that it is an official race. Logistically avoiding areas that needed hard to attain permitting, Dan Probst has moved the event to Concrete, Washington. Nestled between the hills of the Cascade Mountains along the Skagit River, Concrete is a perfect beginning to an ultra run.  History has given way to the future. The Mount Baker Marathon was a competition that lasted from 1911 to 1913. According to Jason Miller, Mayor of Concrete, there was a short lived rivalry between the towns of Concrete and Bellingham, racing to the summit of Baker from either side. Read Jesse Williams' first hand account (HERE) of the 2016 finish by 12 runners, which included three runners of previous years. This is the last year the race was ran on the Bellingham side as a "fun" run and not a race. Probst has been trying to get approval by various land managers to create the Bellingham-Mount Baker Trail.
