Here's the unedited transcript of this episode:
If you’re working by yourself then things are a little easier to keep a track of. You can generally remember details about the different jobs. But as soon as you introduce variables, things get more complicated. How many people have you hired? What were they hired for? Which freelancer does that?
Now, let’s not get carried away here. I’m not advocating doing a heap of paperwork just for the sake of doing paperwork. What we do need to do though is get a clear plan so both you and your freelancer know exactly what is going on. Lack of communication is a critical problem in many outsourcing relationships, which is really disappointing. It actually doesn’t need to be that difficult.
You know the old saying “if you don’t have a plan, you don’t know where you’re going”. Well, with outsourcing that is doubly true. You’ll be confused but more importantly your freelancers won’t know what you expect from them.
So open a word doc and type in all the background information that might be useful for a freelancer – and for you. I have a great little template available in Outsourcing All Stars but you can give it a shot.
You would include everything from names and titles through to screenshots, instructions and timeframes. Make sure you keep it updated when things change and share it with the all your stakeholders.
