052: The Importance of Executing a Last Will with Attorney April Charleston
In this episode, I'm speaking with my estate and business attorney April Charleston, specifically about estate planning. If you have a child and you want to ensure their future, then you have to listen to this episode because you need to have a last will.
According to April, the most common reason people wait too long or never get around to completing their will is they don't have anything. They think they don't need it because they haven't saved up a lot or they don't own much real estate. But April wants to clarify that estate doesn't necessarily mean a castle or a stable full of horses, or a million dollars in the bank. Everyone has an estate, even if you just have a pair of slippers, that's your estate. “Estate” sounds fancy, but it doesn’t have to be.
Another reason is that it's sort of a taboo when we're talking about death since it's a painful process. A lot of people naturally put a wall up between their psyche and that eventuality. But the truth is we are all going to die, and so it's something we need to prepare for. Don’t you think this is a loving gesture to people we want to take care of?
April also explains that estate planning is not only for when you've passed away, but even very much so when you're alive. And so, if you have family and you care about them, you can definitely make your living will beforehand so they won’t have to make those difficult types of decisions, if the need arises.

April is the founding member of The Charleston Firm in Chester County. April’s focus is on estate and trust administration and estate and tax planning. In addition to her estate practice, April represents many small, mid-sized and family-owned businesses, handling and resolving divergent matters.
April counsels many families and individuals in a wide array of personal and business concerns. She handles all aspects of both commercial and residential real estate transactions on behalf of sellers, purchasers and investors.
April has tried cases in courts of multiple jurisdictions in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She also practices in an area of personal passion, by representing both visual and performing artists. She lives in West Chester with her husband and two young children.
