This one word that many of use often can make us sound less confident, less certain and less grateful.

Yes, just. Think about it. We might say, "I'm just calling to ask," vs "I'm calling to ask"

Which sounds more confident? Yes, the second one. 

Using the word just  minimizes whatever comes next.
