Education Unplugged

08. Dear First Year Teacher

Listen Later

Dear first year teacher, this episode is for you. Yes, you. The first year teacher who feels scared and anxious. The first year teacher who feels excited and ready to take on the broken system. The first year teacher who wants to make a lasting change in education. The first year teacher who can’t wait to meet her students. The first year teacher who is printing, laminating, and cutting to make her classroom feel inviting for her students. The first year teacher buying all the books and supplies for kids she hasn’t even met yet. The first year teacher who just graduated college, eager to put that degree to use. Yes, first year teacher, this episode is for you.

In today's episode, I am going to give you six pieces of advice to take with you on the first day of school, to last you through your first year of teaching.

Advice
1. Let the first day of school be what it is - a mess.
2. Set clear and nurturing expectations.
3. Closed mouths don’t get fed.
4. Mind ya business.
5. Make your parents your allies.
6. Advocate for what is right.
