Simply defined "Sloth" is a rejection of purpose.  When we turn away from the purpose that we were created to fulfill in essence we are telling God "I got this".  It's the thought that our freedom is the most important thing in our lives which leads to thinking like "I'm going to do what I want, when I want and how I want" that gets us into trouble.
