09: 7 Key Takeaways from my First Marathon

Listen Later

Though it certainly tried, the flu was not able to dissuade me from sticking to my commitment and running the marathon I’ve been training for. As I mentioned briefly last week, while I wasn’t able to reach my goal, just being able to complete the race was a major accomplishment in and of itself—and one that provides a valuable learning experience.

So for this week, I’m taking some time to reflect on my marathon experience—how my life led me to it, how it was in the moment, and what I took away from it after I finished. In the process, I hope to help you build a more effective goal-setting strategy, one that is sustainable, will properly challenge you, and which ultimately serves your emotional and physical needs.

The Finer Details of This Episode:

- I recap my very complicated history with running, both my highs and lows.

- What steps I took to get myself into the ideal shape for this marathon.

- Why taking shortcuts in the course of your training or preparation is not going to help you in the long run.

- The hard choice you need to make when a complication arises at the worst possible time.

- The reason you should always try to see a difficult task through to the end, even if you know you won’t be able to make all or even most of your goals.

- Why it’s so necessary to stay rooted in the moment and not think too far ahead.

- Be picky about who you choose to be your support team.

- Figuring out the best kind of goal to set for yourself.

- Last but certainly not least: don’t forget to enjoy yourself in the moment and refuse to let your training or task be a thankless chore.

Quotes:

“I knew it would be an undertaking but I really wanted to give it my all and try.”

“We can enter into the final stretch with a lot more confidence if we’ve done all the work.”

“Do what you can control right now.”

“The body goes where the brain goes.”
