Healing & Dealing

09. Finding Freedom from Alcohol:A Journey of Discovery

Listen Later

Katherine Pope is joining me in today’s episode of Healing and Dealing Podcast, a medical death investigator and forensic anthropologist. She was one of my coaches when I went through the path with this naked mind. Today she shares her transformative journey of achieving sobriety and embracing an alcohol-free life, the challenges faced, the importance of self-discovery, the role of support from loved ones, and the significance of data-driven tracking in the recovery process. This episode highlights the importance of taking ownership of one's life, seeking support, and being open to change and personal growth. It also touches upon the concept of neuroplasticity and the power of the subconscious mind in shaping behaviors and beliefs. The message conveyed throughout this episode is one of hope, transformation, and gratitude for life.

“During that sober curious period like I kept testing the waters I think for me when I noticed that I wanted to kind of cut back it was like I couldn't have just one, that fun, that enjoyment, that relaxation was gone. It was like my off switch was gone. And so what I tell people now is like, well, I know I can't just have one so I choose to have none. And that may change in the future. I don't know, I don't have a good excuse right now to test it. I'm enjoying this life right now.”

Highlight for this episode:

  • The journey to sobriety involved reading books and participating in alcohol experiments that provided clarity on the effects of alcohol on mental and physical well-being.

  • Setting emotional-based goals was instrumental in the journey to sobriety, focusing on feelings and experiences without the need for alcohol.

  • Sobriety has allowed for genuine laughter, joy, and a clearer perspective on life experiences, enhancing relationships and self-awareness.

  • Mindful decontamination involves writing down feelings and observations after drinking, which aids in self-reflection and better decision-making in the future.

  • This Naked Mind: The program has been instrumental in the speaker's journey to sobriety. It emphasizes the importance of taking ownership of one's life, recovery, and discovery.

  • Neuroplasticity and Change: The speaker discusses neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to change and develop new connections, and how it relates to behavior change. When trying to change a behavior or belief, the brain can resist and cause discomfort, but this is a natural part of the process of change.

  • ACT Technique: The ACT technique (Awareness, Clarify, Turnaround) is a method used in the program to challenge and examine beliefs about alcohol.

  • Support and Honesty: The speaker highlights the importance of having support during the sobriety journey.
