With a heavy focus on combat mechanics, one might be inclined to compare this with other games that also have “souls” in their names… but this game is decidedly more indie, brought to life by a passionate individual. Our listeners have spoken and decided via poll that this episode will center on the action-role playing video game developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. The story may be centuries old, but this game is incredibly fresh. When you see that the title includes a forced acronym and hear that the protagonist’s full name is “Beyond the Grave” some eyebrows are justifiably raised. Nevertheless, Tom and Chris are honor bound to heed listener Adam's (from Revival and Extinction Pod) request and thus this episode focuses on the third-person action shooter developed by IGGYMOB. With a protagonist designed by acclaimed manga artist Yasuhiro Nightow (of Trigun fame) and a franchise that stretches back two decades and includes multiple games and an anime, it is clear that this property has some dedicated fans. The tried-and-true Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button is in control and has selected the so-fresh-it’s-not-technically-done indie platformer created by Studio Doodal for this episode. Information on this indie developer is particularly sparce but it appears they plan to specialize in creating story-driven games with compelling background lore. Will this narrative focus complement the precision platforming, or will it prove distracting? Is it even fair to judge a game while it is still in the early access phase? The “Surprise Me” button certainly thinks it is… so Tom and Chris must play for an hour and make a decision. Does this story have a hoppy ending? Lettuce pray it does.

The Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has selected the murder mystery social deduction game from German indie developer VestGames as the subject of this episode. In this online game, players are assigned a random role as either a villager or a conspirator and then must work to eliminate the other group. The game is full of hidden information, so investigation and deduction are the main thrusts of the gameplay. With just an hour on the clock to learn the game and make their decision, Tom and Chris are ready to investigate these village murders. Will this game stand up to scrutiny or will it be judged guilty of wasting their time? Give this episode a listen and hear the verdict!

Inspired by 90’s JRPGs, one man decided to make his own.

Once again, game selection was left to our listeners and the result of that poll was this turn-based, 16-bit-style RPG developed by Matthias Linda. It turns out that if you exclude some of the backgrounds and the music, basically everything else was done by this one individual. His intent was to capture the feelings of playing those games back in the 90’s and reviews suggest that he was successful in the attempt. After some time on other platforms, the game has made its way to Xbox Game Pass and landed in front of our hosts. Growing up on these same games, will Tom and Chris agree with the internet consensus, or will they have a different take? With decades between them and those beloved games, can this new title ignite the flames that kept them playing for countless hours? The mandated hour is up, so let’s find out if this one echoes in their hearts!

This game may have lost the poll, but the Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button has declared that our hosts will be playing it anyway! Developed by Quebec-based ManaVoid Entertainment, this indie adventure title is chock full of RPG elements, including a host of collectable allies and a turned-based “battle” system. You play as the titular Billy and you are set on a quest to restore color to the world and undo the curse of a particularly surly leviathan. Well it’s clear the game is aptly named, but is it a fun experience? Our hosts have each recorded their thoughts over an hour of game play and now they will report back on their findings. Let’s find out if there’s a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow!

In a not-so-surprising move, the Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button has resumed torturing poor Chris by choosing a third person survival horror game. Developed by Tango Gameworks, this selection also happens to be a sequel to a game that neither of our hosts have ever played. It seems obvious that the deck is stacked against this title, but with both solid critical reviews and a lineage that traces back to the Resident Evil series, will the final decisions prove surprising? As usual, the game has just one hour to carve its place within the hearts of our hosts. With the time now up and the controllers put down, is this an evil that sinks in, or will Tom and Chris be looking for a hasty exorcism?

Always on the hunt for their next game, our hosts put this episode's selection up to a vote and the winner was this action roleplaying game developed and published by Capcom. While this is apparently the sixth mainline entry in the series, it turns out there are basically quadruple that many entries in total! You might be surprised to learn that despite his self-professed love of monsters, Tom has curiously avoided this entire franchise since its inception nearly twenty years ago. Chris, on the other hand, has spent countless hours with Monster Hunter World, so he will bring all that experience along for comparison. With just an hour of gameplay allowed, will our hosts even scratch the surface of what this game has to offer? Will the fact that they played cooperatively totally skew their perception of the game loop? Now that the hunt has concluded, let’s see if they will be going back for more!
