  • 1H1D #80: Disc Room

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge multiple spinning blades of death... right?

This title is listed as an action puzzle game and that seems pretty appropriate. Developed by Terri, Dose, Kitty, and JW, this is just one of many quirky indie titles published by Devolver Digital. The premise is fairly simple, your objective is to dodge an endless array of different spinning discs long enough to unlock access to additional rooms. Death is a constant, inevitable companion and a necessary component of many of the side quests. Will dying repeatedly in this bullet-hell style game actually turn out to be fun, or will it feel more like being dragged through literal hell? Our hosts have dedicated an hour to the experience and now are ready to DISCuss. Puns aside, we can safely promise this review will be less painful than being repeatedly sawed in half.

  • 1H1D #79: The Forgotten City
When your Skyrim mod is so involved that it just becomes its own game.
Who doesn't love a good mystery? Well, truthfully the inhabitants of this idyllic Roman city aren't big fans, but they do have a compelling reason. You see, if any citizen commits a sin in their little paradise, the whole town pays with their lives. Your job is to travel back in time to figure out who dunnit... but unlike Clue, you wanna solve this crime before it actually happens. Yeah, we agree it is pretty trippy, but the developers at Modern Storyteller must have it all figured out. What began as a mod for Skyrim is now a standalone adventure RPG available on Xbox Game Pass and our hosts have been tasked with playing for an hour and coming to a decision. Will sixty minutes be enough time to get them hooked on what is sure to be a cerebral affair? Let's find out!

  • 1H1D #78: Going Under

It has nothing to do with Australia or a medical procedure.

Uh oh! It looks like our hosts are back to playing roguelikes again! For this episode, our duo has been tasked with playing an action RPG variant developed by Aggro Crab and published by Team17. Will this title's focus on humor and its bright color palette set it apart from the many other roguelikes they have already encountered? Will a plot focusing on an unpaid intern forced to battle the ghosts of failed startups resonate with our players or feel too much like revisiting past trauma? Tom and Chris have each "gone under" for an hour and now it is time for them to decide whether to see this internship through to the end or to turn in their employee badges and call it quits!

  • 1H1D #77: This War of Mine

Imagine if The Sims had a wartime expansion…

Instead of focusing on the front-line combatants, this war survival game developed and published by 11 bit studios focuses on the civilian experience. Hunger and sleep deprivation are your biggest threats in a city torn apart by conflict that asks the player to manage their homebase during the day and go out foraging for supplies when night falls. This one is definitely a departure from most of the other games this show has tackled on Xbox Game Pass, so it will be interesting to see how our hosts respond. As usual, they have played the game for the standard hour and have collected their thoughts. Now it is time for them to sit down and decide if This War of Mine is one that's gonna shine!

  • 1H1D #76: Prey

Not the religious kind, the kind where things try to eat you.

This first-person shooter developed by Arkane Studios has very little in common with its 2006 namesake. Well, in both games you are being hunted by aliens, but that’s basically the beginning and end of the similarities. Of course, this led to some concerns as fans looking forward to “Prey 2” received this very different game instead. With no prior experience to the franchise, will any of this matter to our hosts? How will they react to the mechanics and the surprise twists in the storytelling? Will an hour be enough time to grab their attention and leave them wanting more? Well, their play time is up and now it’s time to discuss, so just hit play to hear their thoughts!

  • 1H1D #75: We Happy Few

If you aren’t literally full of joy, the other citizens will take notice… and kill you.

On this episode, we hand control back over to the Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button and find ourselves faced with an action-adventure survival horror video game developed by Compulsion Games. Chris appears to have been extra targeted this time because the game allegedly has roguelike elements as well. If you ask us, that’s a lot of genre-splicing and it makes us wonder if the execution will live up to the ambition. With an alternate 1960’s setting and a healthy dose of social commentary, it’s clear this game has its roots in classic novels like Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four. How will those themes translate into the modern storytelling medium of video games? Will an hour of gameplay be enough to hook our hosts and keep them playing when the required time is up? Tom and Chris are ready to share their decision, so give this episode a listen to find out!

  • 1H1D #74: Bugsnax

Would you rather eat a snack bug or a bug snack?

The mere premise of this first-person adventure game sounds absurd… and then you find out that it comes from the same zany studio that brought you Octodad. The team over at Young Horses combined bugs and snacks into the game’s eponymous creatures and now a listener has tasked our hosts with sampling this unusual offering. Will the colorful art style and unique premise prove delectable, or will it leave a bad taste in their mouths? Historically, games involving bugs lean toward horror, but this game definitely suggests a much more light-hearted approach. Does that mean Chris will be free to enjoy the experience, safe from insect-induced jump-scares? On the topic of friendly critters, we all know that Tom enjoys playing Pokémon, so it seems inevitable that some comparisons will be made to that franchise in his review. If you want to know if those comparisons are favorable, however, it looks like you’ll need to hit play and give this episode a listen!

  • 1H1D #73: Greedfall

The wiki says this game was developed by spiders…

The Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button is back in control and it has selected an action role-playing game developed by Spiders for this episode! Okay, so it turns out that “Spiders” refers to a French game developer and not a group of arachnids that have achieved sentience and the capacity to program a video game. This is probably good news for our hosts, especially after all that time they spent killing virtual spiders a few episodes ago. Regardless of the game’s origin, Tom and Chris are admittedly intrigued by the intersection of action RPG and 17th century fantasy setting. Will it live up to their expectations or will it feel like an inferior Assassin’s Creed? Our dynamic duo has spent an hour with the game and now they are ready to report back and reveal if it is worth your time. Give this episode a listen to find out!

  • 1H1D #72: Cities: Skylines

SimCity may be gone, but that left a vacancy for a spiritual successor.

Once upon a time, a game called SimCity was synonymous with the sim game genre. Of course, that was before its final entry totally bombed, souring the brand recognition of a storied franchise. Seizing their opportunity, this power vacuum in the city sim space was filled by a certain city-building game developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive. Will this 2015 title be able activate the nostalgia centers in the brains of our hosts? Is it divergent enough from the SimCity formula to avoid being seen as a clone? Will Tom be able to use a mouse and keyboard even though he is playing on the Xbox One? Most importantly, will the 1H1D team regret turning over control of the game selection to their listeners? Specifically Matt Sacco from The Crowned Heathens podcast? Find out the answers to these questions and more as Tom and Chris sit down to chat about their hour and give you their final decision.
