  • 1H1D #51: Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition

Embrace your role as bug knight and vanquish other bugs, but only the bad ones… right?

That Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button sure seems to love these indie titles! On this episode, our hosts reflect on the hour they spent with the metroidvania action-adventure game developed and published by Team Cherry. This acclaimed game has seen a few revisions over the years and this particular release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in September of 2018 came with additional balancing, bug fixes, and a new menu style. Will any of that matter to two people who have never touched the game before? Will this game live up to the hype or fall victim to its own success? Tom and Chris have played the first hour and now it’s time for you to hit play to hear their decision!

  • 1H1D #50: Yakuza Kiwami 2

Been spendin’ most our lives livin’ in a gangsta’s paradise… in Japan!

This is what happens when Sega takes the Dragon game engine and uses it to remake a PS2 title from 2006. The all-knowing internet claims that this is an action-adventure game, but it looks like our hosts may be of a different opinion on the matter. Adding to the intrigue, Chris has warned that cutscenes will probably play a major role in the hour the boys are allowed to experience. With time as the enemy, what will their actual playtime look like? The Xbox “Surprise Me” button may have made the selection, but only Tom and Chris can make the decision. Give this episode a listen and find out what they think!

  • 1H1D #49: Haven

All you need is love… and food… and stuff to fix your spaceship.

A game about love, well isn’t that grand! In this third-person adventure game from The Game Bakers, the player takes on the twin roles of star-crossed lovers trying to live out a peaceful existence on some far-flung planet. Things are not as simple as they seem, though, as the story unravels and our couple is forced to deal with bigger challenges than what to make for lunch. What will our hosts think of this decidedly off-beat game? Will they enjoy the deviation from the standard adventure game formula or will it end up feeling way too niche? They have each given it an hour and distilled their thoughts so you can harvest their decision in less time than an episode of your favorite anime. The time to hit play has come!

  • 1H1D: THRILLING THIRTY-TWO!

We are doing that sweet sixteen bracket thing, but this time with twice games!

We checked and we are pretty confident this is not a term used elsewhere, so there won't be any confusion this time! On this VERY special episode, we have Wandering Dutch join us to recap the next 32 games that we've played here on 1H1D. Did we double the number of games to up the ante or did we just forget to do a bracket after the second batch of sixteen games? Give this special episode a listen and you may learn that answer. Regardless, we promise you will learn which game is our favorite as we pit them all against one another in a randomized bracket!

  • 1H1D #48: Undertale

This game has a sizable cult following, but does it deserve it?

The epitome of an indie game, this title was virtually entirely created by one person, Toby Fox. Strictly speaking, it is a 2D role-playing game about a child who has fallen into the underground and wants to return to the surface world, encountering all manner of strange monsters along the way. Beyond that, most of the decision making on how to navigate those encounters is left to the player, which leads to some interesting results. Will the narrative grab a hold of our hosts and demand that they keep playing after their hour is up? Will they respond positively to a modern game that looks and feels like it was made back in the 80s? Join Tom & Chris as they discuss their hour with this lauded indie title and come to a decision.

  • 1H1D #47: AI: The Somnium Files

What happens when the AI replaces your eye?

This mystery adventure game was both developed and published by Spike Chunsoft, who are probably best known for their contributions to the Pokémon and Dragon Quest franchises. This game is decidedly unlike those others, however, and the jury is out on how our hosts would classify this game's genre. Living somewhere between an old school point and click game like Myst and a more modern visual novel game like Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, this game is unlike most games that our hosts tend to play. We suppose that's both the promise and the curse of letting the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button pick out the games for review. As usual, Tom & Chris spent an hour with the game and are now ready to report back on their experience. How much of this game's mystery have they solved? Was it just enough to get them hooked but leave them wanting more? There's just one way to find out... give this episode a listen and learn their decision!

  • 1H1D #46: Nier: Automata: Become As Gods Edition

With a title like this, you know Square Enix is involved.

Series creator Yoko Taro has directed every game in this franchise with the exception of Drakengard 2... which is a confusing statement because this game revolves around a war between androids and machines and those Drakengard games focus on swinging swords and flying around on dragons. Nevertheless, we have it on good authority that they are indeed connected. This particular episode is about the "action RPG" developed by PlatinumGames but, after just a few minutes, even that genre assignment becomes questionable. The "Surprise Me" button has definitely left our hosts surprised with this selection, but it will take them an hour of gameplay to decide if it was cause for celebration or rather unwelcome. Fortunately, you don't need an hour to learn their thoughts! Give this episode a listen and see if this genre-bending game is something they will keep on playing.

  • 1H1D #45: Farming Simulator 19

After simulating goats, it was only natural to simulate the whole farm.

It's hard to know where this entry falls in the vast array of Farming Simulator titles that have been released since 2008. What is known is that they were all developed by Giants Software and their gameplay revolves around managing a farm. Will an utter lack of agricultural knowledge mean that our hosts are completely out of their depth or will the game show them the ropes? The longevity of this series implies that the gameplay must be compelling to millions of players, but will Tom and Chris be counted among them? The Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button has once again picked the game, but it will be up to our hosts to play it for an hour and decide if it's a prize winner or not. Now give this episode a listen to find out if this game goes home with a blue ribbon!

  • 1H1D #44: Mass Effect: Andromeda

This game made the Mass Effect series a quadrilogy, just like Alien films… uh oh.

When your first foray into a series is the fourth entry, it is pretty likely that you are going to feel a bit lost. Fortunately for our hosts, playing this action RPG developed by BioWare does not require that you spent 80+ hours playing the prior trilogy first. With a fresh set of characters and a new story set outside The Milky Way, this game endeavors to be approachable to anyone. The question is, will just one hour of game play be enough to rope in our hosts and leave them wanting more? To increase the excitement, Nave and Phillip from Gaming Together: A Cooperative Podcast are on board to give their thoughts on the game and the franchise in general. The Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button may be at the helm, but only our hosts can determine if this game is a pleasant voyage or an interstellar tragedy. Tune in and see if this title sinks or swims!

  • 1H1D #43: Subnautica: Below Zero

If you are underwater and it's below zero, aren’t you just frozen in ice?

Because the “Surprise Me” button clearly enjoys skipping the first entry in every series, on this episode our hosts dive right in to the 2021 sequel to 2018’s Subnautica. Hopefully continuity will not be a major factor in this first-person, survival game developed and published by Unknown Worlds Entertainment. Our hosts have heard quite a lot about the original game, but surprisingly little about this second entry in the series. Apparently it started out as an expansion and then grew in scope to become a standalone product. Will this change in gears be evident in the gameplay? How will it stack up to similar games like The Long Dark? Just like proper scientists, our hosts have done their research and will now discuss their findings! Join them to hear their results!
