She graduated magna cum laude and matched into the highly competitive field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX where she was the first African-American female resident in plastic surgery. Dr. Lattisha Bilbrew is an Orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in Hand and Upper Extremity surgery and the first Black women Orthopaedic Surgeon to become a partner at Resurgens Orthopaedics in Atlanta, GA.
Dr. Bilbrew was born in Birmingham, England as were her parents. Her grandparents were farmers in Jamaica and migrated to England shortly after World War II. Only one generation removed from farming in the mountains of Trelawney and cleaning hospital bed linens in England, Dr. Bilbrew became the first physician in her family. Her motivating catalyst for becoming a physician was watching the mistreatment of her grandmother in an English hospital. Though her first observation of a hospital setting was witnessing racial disparities within a health care system, she was determined to be the antithesis of the physicians she observed.
We sit down with special guest and small business expert JR Mcnair. We discuss his SB community and his new upcoming podcast Small Business Nation.
Douglas Johnson and his life partner, Akilah Love, founded The DNA Brand in 2019 in Toronto, Canada. Since his formative years, Douglas, a former Elite Basketball player and restaurateur, always had a strong passion for entertainment and community building due to being an athlete and leader amongst his peers and life experiences in his native, Nova Scotia, Canada. Akilah, a socialite and serial entrepreneur, also had a strong passion for events and community, likely due to her upbringing in a family of politicians and community leaders. From childhood, and independently from 1987 to the present, Akilah has been involved in community initiatives in collaboration with government programs both in Barbados and Canada. In 2017, Douglas and Akilah joined forces and vision in business by way of restaurant co-ownership and an entertainment management company. Soon after, it was clear both Douglas and Akilah were aligned and motivated to serve: in 2018 The DNA Brand would be born to help improve the lives of others in mind, body, soul and finances. To share knowledge locally, nationally and globally, Doug and Akilah created multiple divisions of The DNA Brand, including DNA Health, DNA Financial Network and The DNA Brand Foundation. Through the Health and Financial Division, DNA will create mentoring programs with an emphasis on Health and Financial Literacy for those in under-resourced and underserved communities. The DNA Brand is currently operating in service locally in Atlanta Georgia, Canada, specifically Toronto and Nova Scotia, and in Accra, Ghana supporting a village and founding a school called The DNA Brand Academy. In the fall of 2023, DNA will also adopt a school in Barbados and offer mentoring, and financial and social support to help the students to reach their peak potentials. March of 2023 will not just be Douglas’ and Akilah’s birthday month, but this month will also commence the first inaugural DNA Diamond Ball, which will serve as the official USA launch for The DNA Brand and its divisions, most importantly for The DNA Brand Foundation inspired by amazing children in Ghana and created to make significant impacts worldwide. You can learn more about this amazing creation at www.thednabrand.com and more about the upcoming lavish ball at www.thednadiamondball.com
Unafraid and unabashed, the Foster Law Firm is rapidly changing notions of what to expect from one's legal representation. At its helm is founder and principal attorney Chinwé N. Foster, who expertly leads a team of four other attorneys and one paralegal, all female, all African-American, and all relentless in their pursuit of excellence.
With thousands of hours of experience in the courtroom and equally as many cases handled, this dynamic and one-of-a-kind Atlanta firm is more than just a collective comprised of pretty faces. Viewing their professional work as a fight for individuals' livelihoods, freedoms, and futures, observers may be surprised to see just how hard this group of representatives is willing to fight to ensure their clients' rights are protected.
Attorney Foster, who attended Howard University School of Law, in Washington D.C., cites the school's mission statement as the basis for her practice.
"A lawyer's either a social engineer or… a parasite on society … A social engineer [is] a highly skilled, perceptive, sensitive lawyer who [understands] the Constitution of the United States and [knows] how to explore its uses in the solving of problems."
After moving to Georgia to practice law, Attorney Foster gained a reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the metro area's legal arena, never shying from standing up for those aforementioned citizens. Known for being adept--and aggressive if and when the situation demands--she continues to shine as a formidable foe with rapidly growing notoriety.
