In 1 Samuel 16, God sends Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king after rejecting Saul. Samuel expects Jesse’s impressive oldest sons to be chosen, but God reminds him that “man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” The forgotten youngest son, David, is anointed, showing that God delights to use the unlikely and equips His chosen with His Spirit.
