Verse 3-5
• “For this is the will of God” – Many Christians and even pastors are unwise not knowing Gods will – Eph 5:17.
i. The Bible is clear and can be understood – 1Thess 4:3, 5:18, 1Tim 2:3-4
• “Even your sanctification” - ~Sanctification – Purification, Seperation~
ii. Positional – Christ has sanctified you – 1Cor 1:2,30, 6:11, 2Thess 2:13,
iii. Personal – Eph 5:1-17, 1Thess 4:3-4, Rom 12:1-2, Col 1:9-11.
• “Abstain from fornication” – Immoral sexual sin (Adultery, homosexuality, beastiality, sex with close relatives, idolatry) – Jer 3:6-10, 1Cor 6:18-20, Eph 5:3.
• “Know how to posses his vessel” – Rom 6:19, Col 3:5, Eph 4:23-25, 2Tim 2:18-21.
• “Not in lust of concupiscence” - ~Concupiscence~ Lustful desires, especially something God has forbidden or sexually immoral desires. This would be walking after the flesh.
• “As the Gentiles which know not God” – Eph 4:17-19 – Who you were is not who you are – Eph 2.
Verse 6-8
• “That no man go beyond and defraud his brother” – We should not take advantage of the brethren – 1Cor 6:6-8, Phil 2:2-5.
• “The Lord is the avenger” – Rom 13:3-4, 12:19, 2Thess 1:8.
• “As we also forewarned and testified” – Paul informed them of this already, not doubt when showing them their need for salvation.
• “God hath not called is unto uncleaness” – Gal 5:19-21 – Some think so since we are under grace.
• “But holiness” – 2Cor 7:1, Eph 4:24, Tit 2:1-8.
• “He that despiseth, despiseth God” – God has called you to sanctification and holiness. To despise the instruction to live holy is to despise God.
• “Who hath given us his Holy Spirit” – Who lives in you – 1Cor 3:16-17, 2Cor 5:10, Eph 4:30.
Verse 9-10
• “Touching brotherly love… ye need not that I write unto you” – He explains why in the rest of this verse and verse 10
• “Ye are taught of God to love one another”
i. In the law – Matt 22:36-40, Lev 19:18, Rom 13:9-10, Gal 5:13-14, Rom 7:12, 15:4.
ii. By God himself – Rom 5:8, 8:35, 38-39, 2Cor 5:14, Gal 2:20, Eph 5:2,25, 2Thess 2:16
• “And indeed ye do it to all the brethren” – This is why the Thessalonians are known as the exemplary church.
• “We beseech…..that ye increase more and more” – 1Thess 3:12, 4:1, Phil 1:9.
