Commissioner Irene hails from a large family in Los Angeles County, California, and moved to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota. She was elected as District 2 County Commissioner in November 2018, becoming the first person of color (alongside District 4's Angela Conley) to be elected to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners.
