For our final episode of Due North, we're talking to Hennepin County Commissioner Irene Fernando! Commissioner Irene hails from a large family in Los Angeles County, California, and moved to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota. She was elected as District 2 County Commissioner in November 2018, becoming the first person of color (alongside District 4's Angela Conley) to be elected to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners. Once you've met Director of Development at Concordia University, peanut enthusiast, and Redeemer Center for Life board member Tootie Martin, you won't forget him. He grew up in Florida and came to Minnesota to play football for Concordia University. Despite the brutal winters, he's been here ever since! Tootie is a charismatic guy with a head for business, a love for family, and a desire to expand his boiled peanut company. Solomon Raymond is the Director of Technology at Redeemer Center for Life and Minister of Education at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Originally from Trinidad, Solomon has lived everywhere from California to Italy. He's passionate about people, technology, and God and was recently released from prison. Lonna Field has been a familiar face at Redeemer Center for Life since her year serving as their Youth Program Coordinator through Lutheran Volunteer Corps. After she wrapped up her LVC service year, she stayed on Redeemer's staff for several years and continued living in North Minneapolis. Now she is the Program Coordinator for the Christensen Center for Vocation at Augbsurg University and an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Check out our interview with her to learn more about how her year at Redeemer impacted her understanding of racism and privilege, the similarities and differences between North Minneapolis and the rural Iowa town where she grew up, and her love of playing the trombone!

Dr. Michael Brooks is currently the dental director of NorthPoint Health and Wellness Center, a multi-specialty medical, dental and mental health center and human service agency in North Minneapolis. He's a fixture in the community and has developed close connections to his patients. Before he started working here, though, he grew up in a large family in Key West, Florida. Tune in to hear more about that upbringing and how the community he grew up in resembles North Minneapolis, his love for spending time with his family, and what drew him to medicine and to dentistry!

Bertha McKinney has a strong commitment to the North Minneapolis community. She grew up in Mississippi and Chicago, and settled in North Minneapolis in 1990 after several moves around the country. Now, she is serving as Community Liaison for the Health Commons at the Living Room, a drop-in health and wellness space that provides everything from health education, to snacks, to massages. Princess Titus and Michelle Horovitz grew up with deep personal connections to food. In 2011, they (along with LaTasha Powell) co-founded Appetite for Change, a non-profit using food as a tool for health, wealth, and social change. Appetite for Change runs a variety of programs, from cooking workshops Community Cooks, to food justice coalition Northside Fresh, to the delicious restaurant Breaking Bread Cafe. Jasmine Greene is using her many skills to give back to the community. She recently became one of the youth coordinators at Redeemer and wants to help neighborhood youth, the way she was mentored through the Step Up program when she was a teenager. She also is a manager at Venture North Bike and Coffee Shop, displays her art in the space, and organizes monthly open mics there. On top of all that, she gave birth to her son in March (mere weeks after this interview was recorded!). Denetrick Powers describes himself as "many beings," and this is certainly true. Denetrick is a current North Minneapolis resident who was involved in Redeemer's youth programming from ages 10 to 18. He is also the lead art organizer for Redeemer's At Home in Harrison project funded by ArtPlace, co-chair of the Harrison Neighborhood Association, and co-founder of CounterSpace Gallery.
