Welcome to Season 2! Roughly 25 million years ago, a massive fissure opened within the Eurasian continent, and, as a result, gave birth to what is now called Lake Baikal. This lake is considered the oldest and deepest lake on earth, measuring an estimated 5,387 feet, or 1,642 meters deep, and contains about 5,521 cubic miles of water (which is about 1/5 of Earth’s fresh surface water). The lake is an ecological and biological marvel, as it features countless species of flora and fauna, with 80% of its more than 3700 species being found exclusively at this location on earth. Located near the Russian city of Irkutsk (aka one of the largest cities in Siberia), this sprawling freshwater expanse is the subject of many, dare I say it, strange and wild occurrences and encounters, leading some to spin tangled webs of conspiracies involving the lake and its possible inhabitants. This is our deep dive into the mysteries surrounding this lake.
