  • Grace Brown: Building a Robot With Social Intelligence for Care

During Melbourne’s long COVID lockdowns, Grace Brown built a robot for herself. She didn’t want it to do her dishes or laundry. She wanted something that would ask how her day was going and give her a hug. That robot became Abi, a playful, child-sized companion now working in more than 20 elder care homes, where she speaks up to 90 languages and has helped residents reconnect after months of isolation.

In this conversation, Cheraé Robinson talks with the founder and CEO of Andromeda about why she set out to prove robotics doesn’t have to be aggressively masculine, and why she believes social intelligence will be core infrastructure for every robot that works alongside people. Grace also opens up about making payroll with her own money in the early days, and the moments with residents and their families that keep her building.

  • Regina Barzilay: Turning Breast Cancer Into a Mission for AI in Medicine

When MIT professor Regina Barzilay was diagnosed with breast cancer, she discovered that almost none of the AI she’d spent her career building was being used to care for patients like her. At the height of her career in natural language processing, she walked away to start over in a field with no funding, no name, and every grant application rejected.

In this conversation, Cheraé Robinson talks with Regina about watching AI go from a field built on grammar rules to the breakthroughs we see today, the decade it took to bring her breast cancer prediction model Mirai into national screening guidelines and her own hospital, and the new tools she’s building to help patients with lung cancer and metastatic disease. She also opens up about failure, patience, and learning to be gentler with herself, and why the real stories behind breakthroughs matter more than the polished ones.
