In this episode my guest is not a band or artist, but someone who has worked in the music industry in various guises here in Finland for many years. Nick Triani is the man behind Soliti, an independent label based in Helsinki with some incredible names associated with it. He has worked as a radio DJ on Radio Helsinki, a legendary independent station here in the city. And he also founded the online publication One Quart Magazine which delves into culture, art and politics.

The main focus today of course is music, and with Soliti having just hosted its 15th birthday party, what better time to chat!

Minot area 3-piece punk band from Missoula, Montana. Under the guise of Miss Saltine, Chicken Wing and Junior Mint, they make intense lo-fi garage records which sound like they could have been made in the mid-70’s as much as they are fresh now. The band are just about to release their 2nd full-length effort ‘Down & Out at the Thunderbird’.

David Gange is a Birmingham based writer, historian, & photographer. As a writer his focus is nature, having published several award winning books and articles for The Guardian, Big Issue and BBC Wildlife Magazine to name just a few. He’s also featured on BBC’s 1 & 2 and Radio 3 & 4 and has worked with music icons such as Tony Iommi and Jamelia. His current project is fascinating, researching the links between nature and heavy metal music.

Hailing from South Wales, Epileptic Lizards are not your standard anything. Mixing 60s and 70s psychedelic and progressive rock with a hint of funk and wonky art rock, this is wonderfully odd stuff. I saw them at the start of the year in London where I was transfixed and now that they’ve brought out a new single - “Garden of Walls” - it seemed like a good time to finally catch up with them…

I spent many nights at this years' Helsinki Festival, visiting one of the most diverse festivals the country has to offer.

This is a review of just the music I saw, from Swedish musician Hannes to Northern Finnish singers Katarina Barruk & Niillas Holmberg, Portuguese fado singer Carminho to French-Beninese Angélique Kidjo and also a Swedish evening with Sunnan & Amanda Bergman. What a festival this was!

Heezer are a 4-piece Finnish grungy stoner rock band hailing from Imatra, a small city located close to the Russian border. Forming in 2020 they released their debut EP a year later and their first album in 2023. Their second album “Stereolith” has just been unleashed on the world and it’s really good!
