Adam brought a curve ball to the game this week with a film none of the hosts had seen. We go to Italy (via a tall, handsome, American man) to discuss the Luchino Visconti epic: “The Leopard”. Take a long horse ride down a dusty road with us as we the discuss the gorgeous design of the film, the director-unapproved “American Cut” of the film, and whether or not Burt Lancaster works in this film. Britt brings to us our second film from The Archers (Powell & Pressburger) and takes us the ballet stage as we discuss the technicolor gem: “The Red Shoes”. Ian has been gone for a year, and while the world keeps moving along we wanted to find a way to celebrate Ian and his favorite films. Adam teamed up with previous guests and podcasts hosts Myke (from CineMusts) and Kieran (from Best Picture Cast) to tackle the worldbuilding director that Ian admired: Ridley Scott. These gentlemen discuss the entire Ridley filmography, frequent collaborators, and embark on the daunting task of creating the definitive Top 5 Ridley Scott films. His highs were super-high, his lows we super-low, but love them or hate them Ridley’s films invited you into a world – a world that Ian loved frequenting.

It’s the start of a new year…and f**k it – we are going to make the best of 2022. It both pains me and fills me with pride to release this episode on “Shaft”. Less than 24 hours after we recorded this episode, my good friend and co-host, Ian Woodington, tragically took his own life. While it hurts to write that out, I feel a tremendous amount of gratitude to share this audio with you. If you like the episode and what we discuss – thank you. Honestly, this one goes out to everyone who knew Ian. Miss you buddy…

I don’t have anything very witty to say about this episode: we end our “Tribute to Ian” series by talking about his favorite film “Withnail & I”. I was so honored to have Liz Woodington (Ian’s wife and guest on our “The Dark Knight” episode) join me to discuss a film so beloved to Ian and so many others. We discuss the peculiarities of Bruce Robinson, the immense quotability of the script, and the wonderful payoff of that final Hamlet speech. Talking about this film without Ian is not the way that anybody wants to hear it, but Liz brought her unique perspective and Ian’s love for this film to the discussion and I could not have hoped for a better episode. This week, Liz recommends “The Boat that Rocked” (available to rent on most major platforms) and Adam recommends “Life Itself” (available on Prime, Kanopy, & Hoopla). I wish I could say that “1001 by 1” is going to continue, but I’m not sure if it will.
