  • Episode 24: #124 - 12 Angry Men
We begin our “Tribute to Ian” series with the oldest film of this selection, but maybe the most resonant for today’s society: Sidney Lumet’s “12 Angry Men”. On the episode, Adam is joined by his wife Melissa (co-host of the Below Freezing Podcast & heard on our “Singin’ in the Rain” episode) to discuss Henry Fonda’s enduring (yet somehow not Oscar nominated) performance, the violence & fragility of Lee J. Cobb’s Juror #3, and the wonderful direction/choreography of Sidney Lumet’s “theatrical” staging. All this and a joint recommendation for the “Fear Street” trilogy on Netflix is in store for you. Want to suggest a film for us to review on the show? • #123 - Ranking Sofia Coppola's Filmography
This week we bring you our final definitive director ranking of the year with our first female director: Sofia Coppola. Managing to work past being the daughter of the guy who directed “The Godfather” & dealing with all of the Razzies shame for her performance in “The Godfather, Part III”, Sofia put her energy into becoming quite the auteur. Adam and Ian go through all seven of her theatrical films, from “The Virgin Suicides” to “On the Rocks”, and come up with the definitive 1001 by 1 list. Where will your favorite land? Guess you’ll have to tune in and listen.

  • #122 - Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
Finishing with our third International film in a row leads us to Spain, Pedro Almodovar, and a Patreon selected pick: “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”. Join the guys at 1001 by 1 as they discuss whether or not this is a “screwball comedy”, Almodovar’s sense of style, and perhaps the greatest performance of a Jehovah’s Witness ever captured on film. Adam and Ian also discuss some of Almodovar’s other films; specifically “Talk to Her” & “Volver”. Also, this week Ian recommends “Gerogetown” (available to rent on most major platforms) and Adam recommends “Primal Fear” (available on HBO Max).

  • #121 - Secrets and Lies
Our second week of International features keeps us in the English language but across the pond as we discuss Mike Leigh’s award-winning film from 1996: “Secrets and Lies”. Adam and Ian dive DEEP into this film discussing everything from what it means to devise scripts, if Brenda Blethyn’s performance is “too much”, and are all of these tangents necessary. The guys of 1001 by 1 go toe-to-toe on this film and ultimately come to a split decision (the first one since “Birdman”) – but who says “yay” and who says “nay”. Also, this week Adam recommends “The Mist” (available to rent on most major platforms) and Ian recommends “Vera Drake” (available on Starz).

  • #120 - Pather Panchali
This week begins a three episode journey into International Films. We start with Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray and his directorial debut “Pather Panchali”. Adam and Ian discuss the lengths Ray went to get this film off of the ground, how gorgeous this film would have been in color, and the way HBO Max is killing the streaming game. It’s a slow, slice-of-life film that has ties to the same issues we face today, but do the guys at 1001 by 1 think it should be in the book? You’ll have to tune in to find out. Also, this week Ian recommends “Dark Waters” (available on Showtime) and Adam recommends “House of Games” (available for free on Tubi).

  • #119 - The Philadelphia Story
Last season, the guys at 1001 by 1 dove into their first Katherine Hepburn film: the Howard Hawks directed “Bringing Up Baby” – and needless to say they weren’t happy with it. Well, it’s a new dawn and this time they’ve brought a guest (Zita Short from The 300 Passions podcast) to journey with them into their next Hepburn film: this time it is the George Cukor directed “The Philadelphia Story”. Tune in to hear them discuss the plight of being rich in the 1940s (please catch the sarcasm there), Jimmy Stewart’s makeup Oscar, and the interesting relationship between Tracy Lord and her father. Also, this week Zita recommends “Pandora and the Flying Dutchman” (currently on The Criterion Channel), Adam recommends “13 Assassins (currently on Hulu), and Ian recommends “Boom Town” (available to rent on most major platforms).

  • #117 - 2021 Academy Awards
The 93rd Academy Awards are almost upon us and we here at 1001 by 1 have opinions – and we’re going to share them with you. Join Adam and Ian as they discuss the “below the line” categories (Why do the Oscars still give an award for Song? Will Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross split their own votes? Does Soul have it in the bag? Why, in general, is Hillbilly Elegy a thing), the “above the line” categories (Who is winning Supporting Actress? Will Lakeith and Daniel split the “Judas and the Black Messiah vote? How good is the batch of Best Actress nominees?), and finally we rank all 8 Best Picture nominees. • #116 - Dog Day Afternoon
Last season we discussed the 1975 film “Nashville” and talked around the other nominees for Best Picture that year. On this episode, we delve into one of those nominees – Sidney Lumet’s “Dog Day Afternoon”. Thanks to our Patreon member Ryan Michael Zepp, he suggested this film and we dove into everything: the real life story the film was based on, Pacino vs. Nicholson throughout the 70s, and just how special John Cazale was as an actor. Also, this week Adam recommends the 1994 classic “Speed” (available on HBO Max) and Ian recommends the pulpy “Charley Varrick” (available to rent on most major platforms).
