Woodstock Leaders Approve Fire Department Plan

The Woodstock City Council unanimously approved a plan for the Woodstock Fire Department that focuses on enhancing operational and administrative efficiency. This plan includes reclassifying positions and implementing a new pay structure, resulting in pay raises for some employees. The goals of the plan are to prepare for future needs, improve operational effectiveness, establish a career development path, and create a Community Risk Reduction Division. This plan will go into effect on January 1 and remains within the approved budget for fiscal year 2024. The plan also involves renaming the assistant fire chief position to deputy fire chief and separating the fire marshal role. Additionally, it reclassifies various positions and introduces a career development path for firefighters. The department will increase incentives for paramedic certification to 10%. The council also made other decisions, including adopting a comprehensive plan, approving conditional use permits, and authorizing an engineering services agreement for a new parks and recreation maintenance building. They also discussed proposed charter amendments to streamline the annexation process.

    5. Brad Thomas and Richard Weatherby Discuss Cherokee's Senior Tax Exemption Cap

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by Powers Electrical Solutions. Today is Monday, October 23rd and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Brad Thomas and Richard Weatherby Discuss Cherokee's Senior Tax Exemption Cap

State Rep. Brad Thomas and Cherokee County Commissioner Richard Weatherby conducted a town hall meeting in Hickory Flat, addressing concerns about rising home values and property taxes. Cherokee County's real property digest increased by 21.81%, with 15.01% attributed to inflation and 6.8% to growth. Thomas is working to potentially eliminate the $485,500 cap on the senior school tax exemption, allowing seniors to avoid taxes on unrealized gains. However, this could result in a $14 million shortfall for the school district. A residency requirement for new seniors moving into the county is being considered. Road and intersection improvements were also discussed, with efforts to maintain a rural atmosphere in the area.
