  • Friends, family, and colleagues remember Judge Frank C. Mills

Judge Frank C. Mills III, a former chief Superior Court judge in Cherokee County, died Friday at the age of 74 at his home in Canton.

Mills was first appointed as a Superior Court judge on Feb. 9, 1981, a position he would go on to hold for 30 years, getting elected eight times. Before that, he was the district attorney for the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit, which serves Cherokee County — he was appointed to that position by then-Gov. George Busbee in 1978.

Even after he retired as chief judge in 2012, he continued to serve on the circuit as a senior judge until last year.

Mills’ son, Frank “Tater” Crouthers Mills, said his father is the “epitome of selfless service.”

Mills’ wife of over 40 years, Mandy Mills, added that her husband was “truly the kindest and best of men.” Here is one of Judge Mills’ longtime friends Billy Hasty talking on their friendship.

    ***Audio CTL Billy Hasty***

Outside the courtroom, Mills was active in community affairs such as the Boy Scouts of America, serving as district chairman and was the recipient of the District Award of Merit in 1992 and the Silver Beaver Award in 1996, the highest award on nomination of a Boy Scout Council for distinguished service to youth.

Mills was also presented the Whitney M. Young Award in 2005 for distinguished service to rural or low-income urban youth, was a volunteer Red Cross lifeguard, CPR, first aid and wilderness first aid instructor, and also received the Justice Robert Benham Public Service Award from the State Bar of Georgia.

In 2013, the local chamber of commerce named him the First Citizen of Cherokee County.

A former Cherokee High School art teacher is bringing an art studio to downtown Canton this summer.

Shanna Coulter, who was an art teacher for seven years at Cherokee High School, is opening Local Color Studio, a 6,200 square-foot art studio that is expected to open in May. Coulter describes what Local Color Studio will be as a “creative co-working space” for Canton, similar to Made Mercantile in downtown Woodstock. The studio is located at the basement level of the former Audio Intersection building at 210 E. Main St. in downtown Canton. The entrance to the studio will be on North Street.

The studio, designed with an open floor plan, will feature a ceramics studio, classroom space and private studio spaces for lease.

Classes will include painting, drawing, ceramics, collage and mixed media. Coulter said she will teach several classes as well.

Membership will work like a gym, with studio and equipment access and discounted classes and workshops, Coulter said. Walk-in guests will have access to the maker space, as well as the 2D and ceramic studios, artist workshops, classes and socials.

An Easter egg hunt April 2 is inviting families to help raise money for a pantry giving food to children at Free Home Elementary School.

West Milford Farm's annual egg hunt is 2 to 4 p.m. April 2. Thousands of eggs will be hidden on the grounds. Families are invited to bring their own baskets.

Admission is a $5 cash donation per participant, or $20 per family. Proceeds from the event will go to Free Home Elementary's Rocket Pantry.

West Milford Farm is located at 7938 Ball Ground Road in east Cherokee County, near Cumming.

Children will be invited to hunt for eggs according to age groups:

    2-2:30 p.m.: 3 and under

    2:30-3 p.m.: 4 to 6 years old

    3-4 p.m.: 7 to 10 years old

Additional activities throughout the day will include a silent auction, cake walk, yard games, face painting and music.

It was forced to stave off a spirited late push, but the Walton girls basketball team defeated Cherokee 66-56 on Friday night at Wheeler to claim the Region 5AAAAAAA championship.

The Warriors outscored the Raiders 33-32 during the second half, but Lexy Harris’ 35 points were too much to overcome as Walton beat Cherokee for the first time this season and win its first region title since 1983.

Cherokee had no answer for Harris, who dominated the paint on both sides of the floor. Behind her, Cici Childers finished with 15 points, while Graycen Ehlen and Kate Bagley each scored eight points.

Toni Warren led the Warriors with 20 points, Hannah Harris scored 14 points and Elle Kenney added seven points.

Friday’s loss marked the end of Cherokee’s six-year region championship run, along with its 13-game winning streak.

For Walton, it finally broke through after dropping its first two games against the Warriors this season.

The Cherokee County School District is a step closer to replacing Free Home Elementary with a new facility.

Thursday, the school board unanimously selected Carroll Daniel Construction for a $36 million construction contract to build the new Free Home Elementary School.

The project is funded by the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, which voters renewed in 2021. As of October, Free Home Elementary has an enrollment of 311, one of the smallest schools in the district.

The project has been brought on by the state’s plans to widen Highway 20 — the campus, at 12525 Cumming Highway near Canton, is in the area slated to become new highway lanes.

In 2021, the school board purchased land from the county for $1.6 million for the new school. The 40.7-acre site is near the current school, north of the intersection of Highway 20 and Highway 372. Free Home Elementary School has a long history in Cherokee County. While the current facility was built in the 1950s, the site has served as a school for over a century.

Etowah wasn't going to let it happen again.

Last season, in Class AAAAAAA, the Eagles reached the region title game before losing to Roswell. This year, the Eagles were given the chance to win a Region 6AAAAAA championship, they didn’t let this one slip away.

Etowah used its trademark defense and transition game to put away a stubborn River Ridge team 61-54 in the region title game Friday at Rome High School. The Eagles, now 19-8 on the year, claim the coveted No. 1 seed from the region heading into next week’s state tournament. For the River Ridge Knights, a 20-7 record and a No. 2 seed in the state tournament are good accomplishments — but the coaching staff knows that to win games on the state level, the Knights will have to be more focused. Brandon Rechsteiner, a Virginia Tech signee, led a balanced Etowah attack with 17 points. Aiden Weaver scored 15, Etter added 11, and Angelakos chipped in 10.

River Ridge was led by Jay McCord’s 16 points, while Greyson Hopf scored 11 and Grayson Helms added 10.

The market is sponsored by Synovus.

Cherokee County School District educators were celebrated on Valentine's Day in the district's annual Share the Love contest.

Earlier this month, CCSD invited families to nominate their child’s teacher or a support staff member at their child’s school to win a $250 Visa gift card. The contest was announced in the monthly CCSD Connections parent newsletter, and four winners were selected at random from all of the nominations. The contest is sponsored by Credit Union of Georgia.

Superintendent Brian Hightower and Credit Union of Georgia Cherokee Area Manager Jason Blakey presented the gifts Tuesday to four winners: Knox Elementary School STEM Academy teacher Sandy Giudice, Liberty Elementary School teacher Tiffany Wilson, Little River Elementary School teacher Chesley Blosser and Sixes Elementary School teacher Melissa Perryman.

Cherokee County accounted for 29 of 36 possible selections on the all-Region 6AAAAAA basketball teams this week, with two players of the year in Brandon Rechsteiner and Mataya Gayle.

Etowah’s Rechsteiner and River Ridge’s Gayle led their respective squads to No. 1 seeds heading into next week’s region tournament. The Eagles are 11-1 in Region 6AAAAAA play, while the Knights went undefeated in the region for the second straight year.

Eight honorees came from River Ridge, including five from the girls team alone — Gayle, first-teamer Sophia Pearl, second-teamer Kayla Cleaveland and honorable mentions Allie Sweet and Makayla Roberson. Through 25 games, Gayle leads River Ridge with 17.1 points per game, adding 5.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds on average. Pearl is averaging 13.4 points, behind only Gayle and Cleaveland (14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds). Etowah had the second-most players named to the all-region teams, with five boys and one girl. Mason Etter joined Rechsteiner as first-teamers, while Chase Clemmons and Dimitri Angelakos were named to the second team. Rechsteiner and the Eagles had an especially strong January. The Virginia Tech-bound guard averaged 19.3 points, 5.1 assists and 4.3 rebounds while leading Etowah to a 9-1 record in the month.

Sequoyah and Woodstock each had five players earn all-region recognition, with Creekview at four.

Following its rejuvenation during region play, Woodstock’s girls were represented by Karson Martin and Casey Miller on the first team, alongside Pearl and Sequoyah’s Elle Blatchford.

Four nonprofit organizations in metro Atlanta have received donations from Delta Community Credit Union toward their respective mission to support local youth education.

The credit union invested $35,000 in the educational services organizations Wednesday, kicking off the 10th year of its “Philanthropic Fund” awards.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta was awarded $10,000 to support its “Big Futures” curriculum, which emphasizes college and career exploration for students in grades 8 through 12. The organization, which offers one-to-one mentoring relationships for area youth, serves families in 12 metro Atlanta counties including Cherokee County. Another $10,000 was awarded to Communities in Schools of Atlanta, a dropout prevention organization that partners with 63 schools in economically challenged areas across Atlanta Public Schools, as well as Clayton County, DeKalb County, and Fulton County Public Schools. The grant will help provide wraparound services and intensive case management to nearly 2,800 students and support the organization’s College and Career Readiness Program.

Breakthrough Atlanta also received $10,000 to support its Vox Teen Voices program, which offers free afterschool and summer workshops for Atlanta teens.

Mental Fitness 21st Century Learning received $5,000 to support its STEAM Academy, which allows many students who lack access to quality, affordable afterschool programs to participate in a STEAM curriculum that includes drones and robotics.

Cherokee County and four of its cities have received a federal grant for the creation of a transportation safety plan to improve pedestrian safety.

Cherokee County, Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock and Ball Ground were awarded a $450,000 action plan grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program on Feb. 1.

The grant was part of $800 million in awards for 510 projects through the first round of funding for the program, which provides funding for regional and local jurisdictions to develop a transportation safety action plan aimed at improving road designs to better sidewalks and crosswalks to prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation’s roadways.

Day told the Tribune Friday that the public can expect to see the plan in 2024. The next steps are to complete grant award agreements and procure a consultant to complete the study. The study will likely begin later this year, he said.

The plan will determine what projects and countermeasures are needed to improve the safety of the county’s transportation system, Day said. With this plan and list of projects, the county and the cities can then set forth a strategy and timeline to complete the projects.

Day added that the plan will likely make recommendations on intersection, signalization and pedestrian facilities improvements, among other possibilities.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services promoted two firefighters Thursday night at the Cherokee County Fire Training Complex.

Fire Apparatus Operator Justin Martin was promoted to the rank of sergeant and Sgt. Nicholas Spain was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. The newly promoted firefighters began serving in their new roles Feb. 5. The two were surrounded by family, friends, and fellow firefighters at the event as they were recognized and celebrated for this accomplishment.

Fire Chief Eddie Robinson pinned the promoted firefighters with their new-collar insignia. Badges were pinned on the firefighters by family members.

    • Former Etowah baseball star Drew Waters gets number retired

Former Etowah baseball star Drew Waters returned to Eagle Peak on Tuesday to see his No. 7 jersey retired by the program.

The Kansas City Royals outfielder helped lead the Eagles to the 2017 Class AAAAAAA state championship, then was selected 41st overall by the Atlanta Braves in that summer’s draft. Waters was named the Cherokee County Player of the Year as a senior in 2017. He hit .510 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs before also earning the Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year. In the 2017 draft, Waters became the highest-drafted high school player in Cherokee County history. Waters stayed after the ceremony to sign autographs and chat with fans, while also taking in the preseason scrimmage against Marist. He spent time pre-game with the current players and worked out with the current generation of Eagles, one year after they were the Class AAAAAAA runners-up.

Local government leaders in Cherokee County and the cities of Holly Springs and Woodstock are working together to create an area plan for future development at the Interstate 575 and Sixes Road interchange, the county announced.

The area in question consists of about 100 acres in the southeast quadrant of the interchange. The land is divided among the two cities and the county jurisdictions. All three governmental entities’ comprehensive land use plans show the parcels as potential regional center and employment opportunities.

To this end, county commissioners unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium Tuesday on the acceptance of any new applications related to rezoning, development or construction in the I-575 and Sixes Road Interchange area.

Holly Springs City Council members are asking county officials to reject a company’s application for a proposed storage facility at North Rope Mill Road in unincorporated Cherokee County near the city.

The city council voted Monday to recommend to county commissioners that they deny a rezoning request for property in unincorporated Cherokee County within the Holly Springs growth boundary area.

The property in question is at 624 North Rope Mill Road, near Sixes Road. The request from Robert Stone is to rezone 11.1 acres from single family residential to light industrial with concurrent variances for an outdoor storage facility for boats and recreational vehicles.

The parcel lies within an area that Holly Springs, Woodstock and Cherokee County officials have identified as a potential jobs center, and Holly Springs and Cherokee County have passed moratoriums on new applications for the area. City staff will send a letter to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners expressing the city council’s concerns regarding the proposed rezoning, Holly Springs City Manager Rob Logan said Wednesday. The application is scheduled to be on the Cherokee County Planning Commission agenda in March.

The city council also discussed an intergovernmental agreement with Cherokee County to conduct the city’s election. The city council will vote on this agreement at the Feb. 23 meeting.
