  • News Minute: Bouncer at Woodstock bar arrested for putting woman in chokehold

A bouncer at a sports bar in downtown Woodstock was arrested in the early hours of New Year’s Day after police say he put a woman in a chokehold while removing her from the bar.

Warren Smith, 37, from Marietta, is charged with aggravated assault by strangulation and battery, according to his arrest warrant by the Woodstock Police Department.

In the warrant, police say Smith was a bouncer at The Daily Draft, where two women were refusing to leave the bar, and another bouncer contacted Smith to help remove them from the business. According to the warrant, one of the women grabbed the other bouncer by the neck, and swung her arms at both of them, then Smith wrapped his forearm around her neck and choked her until she was unconscious. Police reported Smith dragged the unconscious woman by her neck and dropped her onto a back porch, where her face hit a chair leg.

  • Woodstock man sentenced to 9 years for domestic violence

A Woodstock man was sentenced to 9 years for two separate domestic attacks; local students spread holiday cheer by giving back this winter; And a new Jimmy John’s opened in Woodstock.

A Woodstock man has been sentenced to serve nine years of prison after he was convicted of multiple domestic violence-related charges.

Elfrem K. Moore was sentenced by Senior Judge Neil Dickert December 6 to nine years in prison followed by 15 years of probation, the Cherokee County District Attorney’s office announced.

Charges stem from domestic violence that occurred in a Woodstock home on Dec. 26, 2021. Woodstock Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a break-in. According to the district attorney’s office, police found the door to the home kicked down, with pieces of the doorframe on the floor and the deadbolt still in the locked position. A woman in the home told officers that Moore attacked her twice that day — in the first attack, Moore pushed her onto a bed and strangled her. She reported she briefly lost consciousness and woke with the defendant still on top of her. He eventually left the home and she used the deadbolt to lock the door to prevent him from returning.

The woman told authorities that when Moore returned and was unable to enter their home, he broke down their door, physically assaulted the woman, then slammed her to the bathroom floor and strangled her again. The woman attempted to call 911, but Moore grabbed her cell phone, threw it against the wall then dropped it into the toilet, rendering the phone unusable.

According to the district attorney’s office, a responding officer used a strangulation assessment card and determined that the victim exhibited multiple signs of strangulation. At the sentencing hearing on December 6, 2022, Assistant District Attorney Alana Driscoll paused for 15 seconds, leaving the courtroom in complete silence, as a means to demonstrate how long Moore strangled the victim in this case. Judge Dickert sentenced Moore as a recidivist. Due to the defendant’s four prior felony convictions, he will not be eligible for parole.

Students, teachers and staff across Cherokee County School District schools marked the end of the semester with charitable giving programs.

Students gave generous donations of toys and other items to nonprofits to distribute to children. They gave essentials and gifts to local seniors, and they wrote holiday cards for nursing home residents, soldiers in the hospital and children with terminal illnesses, and more.

School district employees also worked to support charity programs and helped provide meals and gifts to families in need

Students at Arnold Mill Elementary school celebrated the end of the year December 9 with a Giving Tree ceremony, in which students gave toys to MUST Ministries for children in need. The donations filled the truck. Bascomb Elementary School’s students, staff and community came together to participate in Cherokee County Senior Services “Adopt A Senior” holiday collection. In total, close to 600 items were generously donated by the Bascomb community. Items including new bed sheets, toiletries, snacks, candy crossword puzzle and word search books and puzzles were collected to form gift bags for each senior at the center. The fifth grade student council made holiday cards to accompany each gift bag. Woodstock High School’s Elves Club raises money to buy clothes and gifts for students in need at Carmel Elementary School and Woodstock Elementary School. Each December, club members go to a local Walmart to shop for the elementary school students. During the final week of the semester, Carmel Elementary and Woodstock Elementary bring students to Woodstock High to have the ultimate holiday party: crafts, snacks, a visit from Santa, and plenty of gifts.

Cameron Pope’s buzzer-beating shot did more than just give Cherokee a 54-52 win over Walton on Thursday at the Campbell Holiday Classic.

It was a defining moment for Pope and a Warriors team that has been the talk of Cherokee County this season.

Going into Friday’s championship game of the Campbell tournament, Cherokee was 10-2 overall, continuing to impress after its 6-0 start counted as the best since the 2013-14 season.

Pope’s game-winner capped a night in which he had 23 points, five rebounds and four steals. Cherokee started slow against Walton but came out of halftime more assignment-sound and focused on the defensive end. That defensive effort translated to the offensive end and a big fourth quarter put the Warriors over the top.

Mason Bennett added 14 points, while Braylin Giddens and Tayden Owens each had seven points.

Cherokee’s two losses were one-possession games against Buford and county rival Etowah. The Warriors are averaging 66.4 points per game while giving up just 52.8 points per outing. Through its first 10 wins, Cherokee took seven by double-digit margins, and four by at least 22 points. On November 29 against Woodstock, the Warriors scored a season-high 85 points and cruised to a 37-point victory. Their average margin of victory was 16.6 points in those games.

Cherokee’s roster is filled with experience to help its case. With five seniors playing big-time minutes in Pope, Owens, Bennett, Giddens and Dastin Hart, the Warriors know how to lead and what to expect. Cherokee has a rematch with Walton scheduled for January 10, which will also tip off its Region  schedule. Three days later, the Warriors will match up with North Cobb.

Cherokee will look to improve on its 5-5 region record from last season, though it was good enough to land them a playoff spot as a Number 4 seed. The region looks especially tough this year, with all six teams over .500 on December 30.

A youth photography contest is inviting students to explore how Cherokee County’s waterways have changed over the years.

The Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority is holding a “Then and Now” photography contest for K-12 students in the county. Students are asked to submit an old photo from Cherokee County that includes a waterway, mill, dam or fish weir, and along with a current photo at the same location. Submissions must include 50 to 100 words explaining the photo and what local resource was used.

Resources for the older photo can include older family members or friends from the area, the Cherokee County History Center, Funk Heritage Center, the Woodstock Visitors Center and local libraries. Submissions should be sent with the student’s name, school and grade and narrative to [email protected]. The deadline for entries is January 18.

  • A Woodstock poodle has helped many families with grief.

Families and individuals visiting Woodstock Funeral Home who are grieving the loss of a loved one will find that there is a kind and calming presence there with them to show support.

Ginger, an 8-year-old red standard poodle, was adopted in February 2020 by Paige Fowler-Ogle from Georgia Poodle Rescue, a nonprofit in Alpharetta run by Deborah Blatchley. Fowler-Ogle is the location manager at Woodstock Funeral Home, where Ginger is a regular. The first thing Ginger does is greet the individual or family at the door. Ginger then walks with them to the office, where she usually sits with Fowler-Ogle and the individual or family who are setting up the funeral arrangements. During this time, she will show her support by letting the person or family pet her, hold her, sit with her — any way she can help, Fowler-Ogle said. Sometimes, Ginger will also walk and sit with families at the viewing, giving emotional support to children and adults.

Ginger is not the first poodle in the Fowler-Ogle household, though she is the first to show this level of understanding and support, her owner said. Since Fowler-Ogle became the location manager a little over a year ago, Ginger has been by her side every day at the office. Ginger often wears a bow that matches her owner’s outfit for the day, which is always a topic of conversation with

visitors and adds to the welcoming feel of the funeral home, Fowler-Ogle said. Fowler-Ogle also paints her dog’s nails. Fowler-Ogle said she knew Ginger would be perfect in this type of environment after seeing her dog’s kindness to her young son. The duo recently visited Manor Lake assisted living in BridgeMill in Canton, where Fowler-Ogle said Ginger was “a big hit.”

A Marietta man has been indicted after authorities say he drowned a cat in Cherokee County this summer.

Austin Hedgeman is charged with one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals, according to an indictment filed December 12. The indictment charges Hedgeman with causing a cat’s death by drowning around July 6.

In an arrest warrant filed July 6 by the Cherokee Marshal’s Office, officers say Hedgeman caused “physical pain, suffering or death to an animal” July 3 and could be heard on a recording saying he held the cat down “until he stopped moving.”

Authorities say the drowning was at a southwest Cherokee County home, near Woodstock. Court records show the marshal’s office originally charged Hedgeman with a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty but the charge was upgraded to a felony.

Hedgeman was arrested July 6 and released July 8 on a $1,000 bond, according to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.

He has a hearing scheduled for January 11, according to court documents.

An indictment is a formal charge of felony offenses, and defendants are assumed innocent until proven guilty.

Northside Hospital is the first hospital system in the United States to receive Maternal Levels of Care Verification from The Joint Commission, the commission and the Georgia Department of Public Health announced.

Northside Hospital also is the first in the state to receive a Level IV Maternal Center Designation from DPH.

The United States has a higher maternal mortality rate than many other developed countries. Georgia is taking action to help improve care for women and newborns. It is one of a handful of states to review risk-appropriate care and the first to collaborate on a program with an accreditation organization.

In 2022, DPH announced a partnership with The Joint Commission, recognizing its MLC Verification program. The program, offered in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), is a verification process that involves an on-site comprehensive review of a hospital’s maternal capabilities and policies, as well as a level of maternal care determination.

Through the partnership, hospitals may seek the optional Maternal Center Designation with The Joint Commission’s MLC Verification program.

For details on the designation process, visit dph dot Georgia dot gov.

Most bills the General Assembly passes each year take effect on July 1.

But a smattering of new laws enacted during the 2022 legislative session will kick in this Sunday, Jan. 1, including a bill making it easier for food trucks to do business and several new or expanded tax credits.

The food truck legislation does away with a current requirement in Georgia law that food truck operators obtain a permit and inspection in every county where they do business.

While the tax credit bills technically became effective last summer, they don’t really become reality until New Year’s Day, the beginning of the tax year.

Three of the measures create new income tax credits.

House Bill 424 will provide a tax credit to Georgia taxpayers who contribute to nonprofit organizations that help foster children about to age out of the foster care system. More than 700 young men and women age out of the system each year.

Senate Bill 361, which was championed by Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, will provide a dollar-for-dollar income tax credit on contributions to public safety initiatives in the taxpayer’s community. Law enforcement agencies will be able to use the money for police officer salary supplements, to purchase or maintain department equipment and/or to establish or maintain a co-responder program.

Senate Bill 87, the Jack Hill Veterans’ Act, honors the late state Sen. Jack Hill of Reidsville, who died in 2020. It provides income tax credits in exchange for contributions to scholarships for service-disabled veterans through the Technical College System of Georgia Foundation. Another bill that will take effect on Sunday, Senate Bill 332, also known as the Inform Consumers Act, is aimed at preventing criminals from selling goods stolen from retail stores on any online marketing platform. It establishes financial and contact information requirements for high-volume sellers to online marketplaces and requires such platforms to establish an option for consumers to report suspicious activity

A Canton pediatrician's office is closed after a burst pipe damaged the building December 24.

A major sprinkler pipe burst in the ceiling of the office of DV Pediatrics on the morning of December 24, resulting in major damage to the entire building.

Although firefighters quickly responded and turned the water off around noon to limit the damage, the damage has prompted a long-term closure for repairs, DV Pediatrics announced. Repairs are estimated to take four to six months. Until they have a working office space, DV Pediatrics will provide home visits, or house calls, phone consultations and telemedicine appointments for sick patients. The pediatric office said the staff are doing everything possible to provide the same level of healthcare services for the families they care for.
