In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we welcome back Prof. David Canon to talk about his teaching and research career at UW-Madison. Prof. Canon will be retiring after a decade's long career here where he is a very popular teacher and prolific researcher. We are very sad to see him move on – but excited to have an opportunity to talk to him about what’s next. Prof. Canon was instrumental in launching our podcast and is a frequent and favorite friend of the pod. And, of course, we promise we will invite him back to the podcast in the future to talk about American politics.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful for the opportunity to welcome Rikhil Bhavnani,Professor with the Department of Political Science here at UW-Madison, where he also serves as Director of Graduate Studies. He is also Faculty Affiliate at the La Follette School of Public Affairs, the Elections Research Center, and the Center for South Asia. Professor Bhvanani’s research focuses on the political economy of development and migration, and on inequalities in political representation, mainly in South Asia. We asked Professor Bhavnani about his teaching and research interests. Much of our discussion focused on economic development and politics in India. We learned so much and enjoyed our conversation. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful for the opportunity to talk to Joshua Dienstag, Professor of Political Science here at UW-Madison. Professor Diesnstag’s research focuses on the intersection of politics with time, history, memory and narrative with an emphasis on European political theory between the 17th and 19th centuries. He also writes about cinema, the American Founding, and the methods of political theory.

Prof. Dienstag teaches a seminar called Humans, Animals and Machines and will be teaching the PS 160 Introduction to Political Theory course this coming fall. We asked Prof. Dienstag about his teaching and research interests as well as his current book project tentatively titled The Human Boundary: Freedom, Citizenship & Democracy in a Post-Human Age. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful for the opportunity to talk to Mikhail Troitskiy, Professor of Practice at UW-Madison. Prof. Troitskiy will be teaching a course called Russian Foreign Policy Since 1991: The Road to War and Beyond in the fall. Prof. Troitskiy’s research focuses on conflicts, security, and politics in Eurasia, Russian foreign policy and U.S.-Russia relations as well as arms control and international negotiation. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were excited to welcome Rochelle Snyder to the podcast. Rochelle is a doctoral candidate in Political Science teaching a fascinating class this semester on representation in American politics. We asked Rochelle about her class and her own academic background and research interests. Our main topic of discussion centered around representation in contemporary politics - what representation means and the state of representative democracy in the US today. We thoroughly enjoyed our discussion, and we learned so much.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were excited to have the opportunity to interview Ashley Bown, Principal and Founder of FourConsultancy LLC, as part of our Career Conversations series. Ashley graduated from UW-Madison with a BA in Political Science in 2010. She earned a Graduate Certificate in Public Policy from UMass-Boston in 2012 and a Master in Public Policy from Northeastern University in 2015. Ashley has served as Head of Government Partnerships, Canada for Spin, was Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Government Relations & Public Affairs to the University of Massachusetts Boston and was a Legislative Director for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts – among many other impressive positions. She’s also a member of the Political Science Board of Visitors. We asked Ashley about her time at UW-Madison as well as her fascinating career path. Noah, who received his BA in Political science and Economics from UW-Madison in 2017, taught a seminar in Environmental Political Thought last term. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to welcome back Prof. J. Michael Collins to talk about near historic inflation in the US. In a podcast recorded in late November, we asked Prof. Collins about the impact of high inflation on the economy and the political process in the US. Prof. Collins walked us through some of the major reasons for high inflation in the current economy and ways that it might be addressed in the US and globally. We learned so much and enjoyed our conversation.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were excited to welcome Jean Vilbert. Jean holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in law as well as as Master's degree in International Public Affairs from the La Follette School of Public Affairs. He is currently teaching courses for the Political Science department. In an interview conducted in December, we asked Jean about his career teaching law and working as a judge in Brazil. We also asked Jean for his insights into Brazilian politics more generally. We had a really interesting conversation, and we learned so much. We hope you will too.
