Ashley graduated from UW-Madison with a BA in Political Science in 2010. She earned a Graduate Certificate in Public Policy from UMass-Boston in 2012 and a Master in Public Policy from Northeastern University in 2015. Ashley has served as Head of Government Partnerships, Canada for Spin, was Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Government Relations & Public Affairs to the University of Massachusetts Boston and was a Legislative Director for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts – among many other impressive positions. She’s also a member of the Political Science Board of Visitors. We asked Ashley about her time at UW-Madison as well as her fascinating career path. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to welcome back Prof. J. Michael Collins to talk about near historic inflation in the US. In a podcast recorded in late November, we asked Prof. Collins about the impact of high inflation on the economy and the political process in the US. Prof. Collins walked us through some of the major reasons for high inflation in the current economy and ways that it might be addressed in the US and globally. We learned so much and enjoyed our conversation.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were excited to welcome Jean Vilbert. Jean holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in law as well as as Master's degree in International Public Affairs from the La Follette School of Public Affairs. He is currently teaching courses for the Political Science department. In an interview conducted in December, we asked Jean about his career teaching law and working as a judge in Brazil. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we welcome back Prof. Steven Brooke to talk about the protests in Iran that began after a 22 year-old woman died while in custody of the morality police for violating the country’s dress code. We asked Prof. Brooke to explain the current situation, how these ongoing protests might be different from those that Iran has experienced in the past, and the impact the uprisings are having on the Iranian government as well as US relations with Iran. In this episode 1050 Bascom, we are happy to welcome back Gavin Luter, Managing Director of UniverCity Alliance at UW-Madison. UniverCity Alliance connects education, service and research activities across UW-Madison with cities and counties across Wisconsin. We asked Gavin about his work and interests in urban affairs at UnivCity Alliance as well as a course he teaches called “Welcome to Your Urban Future.” We also asked Gavin how students might get involved in on-the ground research and policy change at the local level, particularly as it relates to city planning and bettering our urban areas. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were privileged to talk with Prof Reed Lei about China’s National Party Congress that occurred in October during what is now an extraordinary time for China in the world. The Chinese economy is facing a series of challenges. The country’s Covid-zero policy means ongoing lockdowns. Chip access is being curtailed by actions from the Biden administration, and the spillover from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is affecting China and its international relationships more generally. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we spoke with Prof. David Canon on the morning after the 2022 midterm elections. Prof. Canon shared with us his biggest take-aways from the elections and offered some insights into what to expect in the coming months and years in American electoral politics.
