In this episode of the 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to speak with Marwa Shalaby, Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies and Political Science, to reflect on the Arab Spring 10 years later. Prof. Shalaby walked us through the history and evolution of the protests over the last decade. She also offered her insights into research suggesting that the sparks of revolutionary change remain and that the hard work of democratic reform continues in the region. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to interview Badger alumni, Jamal Habibi, who was appointed by President Biden to be the Chief of Staff of the Rural Housing Service at the US Department of Agriculture. Jamal is a 2011 Badger grad who majored in Political Science and Languages and Cultures of Asia. Prior to his current position, Jamal worked as a Senior Associate at the Opportunity Finance Network and held executive positions at Discovery Inc. and the US Department of Treasury. We asked Jamal about his time on campus and he shared with us his career pathway to his new leadership role at the Department of Agriculture.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to interview Susan Webb Yackee, Director of the La Follette School of Public Affairs and Professor of Political Science. Prof. Yackee is currently conducting research for the IBM Center for the Business of Government to be shared with the Biden Administration. The project seeks to offer recommendations aimed at facilitating increased public engagement in regulatory policy-making processes. We asked Prof. Yackee about this important research. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to speak with Manuel Teodoro, Professor of Public Affairs at the La Follette School of Public Affairs, to talk about water, environmental policy, and public utilities. We also asked Prof. Teodoro for his take on the breakdown of public utilities in Texas during the recent winter storm that left hundreds of thousands without electricity and heat for several days. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were excited to collaborate with the La Follette School of Public Affairs to talk about with Tim Smeeding, Professor of Public Affairs and Economics, about the impact of the pandemic on inequality, employment and poverty. Prof. Smeeding offered his insights into current legislation that seeks to reduce poverty by expanding the help that the government gives families with children. Prof. Smeeding explains why this legislation, which has bipartisan support in Congress, is key to addressing childhood poverty. He also shared advice to students interested in public policy career paths. We thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Prof. Smeeding and learned so much.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to welcome back Prof. Scott Straus to talk about his new role as Chair of our Political Science Department. Prof. Straus shared some of his goals for the department and talked about how he is thinking about his leadership role on campus amidst an ongoing pandemic, a revitalized civil rights movement, and deep political divisions across the state and nation. We also appreciated Prof. Straus’ insights into helping us address questions of political violence in a comparative context. We enjoyed our conversation with Prof. Straus and learned so much.
