In this episode of 1050 Bascom we were grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the Graaskamp Center for Real Estate to talk to Joaquin Altoro, the executive director of the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Association (WHEDA) to talk about the intersection of politics, racial equity and affordable housing. Prior to his appointment to WHEDA, Joaquin served as the City Plan Commissioner for the City of Milwaukee.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to have the opportunity to talk with Prof. Powell about power sharing in Congress in the context of the new Biden Administration. We asked Prof. Powell for her take on current efforts to pass Covid Relief legislation, the pending impeachment trial, and the deep partisan divisions in the Senate and the House that may make policymaking challenging in the coming months and years. In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful for the opportunity to interview Paul Kelleher, Professor of Bioethics and Philosophy at UW-Madison. Prof. Kelleher’s teaching and research explore ethical and philosophical dimensions of public policy, especially health policy and climate policy. Prof. Kelleher shared his insights on bioethics and Covid-19, and how public policy responses to the global pandemic have played out at the national, state and local level over the last year. He has served on two state-level allocation committees, as well as the UW Hospital ethics committee concerned with ICU triage. We learned so much from Prof. Kelleher and enjoyed our conversation.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the Graaskamp Center for Real Estate at the UW-Madison Business School to speak with Paige Glotzer, Professor of History, about housing segregation in U.S. cities from a historical perspective. Prof. Glotzer offered her insights into how suburban developers, including Baltimore’s Roland Park Company, ushered in modern housing segregation with the help of transnational financiers, real estate institutions, and public policymakers. She shared with us how the effects of their efforts continue to be felt today here in Madison and across the country.
