This morning we discuss Yom Kippur's repeated message of the power of silence, and the need to push back against the incessant, unlimited, and constant noise in our lives. During Yom Kippur, we must, from time to time, interrupt the sounds and the noise, including our own prayers - and relate to God, and each other, through silence. Using the example of Arnold Palmer, and the search for life after an earthquake, we explore the Kotzker Rebbe's insight that silence is the greatest cry in the world.

Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation.
