This morning we discuss the ongoing, never-resolved debate on whether the Nazir (one who vows to abstain from wine, cutting hair, etc.) is taking a positive step or a negative step. We analyze the apparent contradiction in the opinion of Rambam (Maimonides), following the insight of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, who differentiates between the spiritual path of the saint vs. the sage. While the saint is praiseworthy for their self-perfection, only the sage can build a moral and just society.
