This morning we discuss how the Jews must have felt, being directed by God out of Egypt away from Israel instead of towards it. Daas Zekeinim teaches us that God's actions are always in our best interest, even if we only see it much later, or even if we never see it. God is our relative. He is taking us by the hand, not in the direction with think we need to go, but in the direction that benefits us best. This is sometimes hard for us to accept, but it is true nonetheless.

Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law.
